Thread: No Country for Old Men

  1. I watched the movie last night. Very entertaining with great acting, suspense and dialogue.

Remember the scene when Ed Tom (Tommy Lee Jones' character) investigated the hotel? Was Anton really in the room? I didn't really understand that part. That's my only complaint unless there's an explanation.

I was surprised by the final scene, but the movie said all it needed to prior to that, so the movie didn't feel incomplete to me. Believe me, if I felt that it did, I would definitely complain about it.

He's not. It's not explained, but it's in Bell's head. He sees the popped lock, and he figures Chigurh may be in the room. In the book, Chigurh is sitting in a car, watching Bell.

This is out on DVD. Everyone buy it.

Thanks for the explanation, I thought Bell didn't see him or something. Great movie.

  5. I thought that he was in the room but he slipped out somehow without Bell noticing.

Makes more sense the other way.

  6. Well, I finally saw this movie. It's about damn fucking time. I ended up watching it in 2 parts because I fell asleep watching it yesterday since I was exhausted.

Overall, it lived up to my expectations, and then some. The direction and cinematography was some of the best, maybe the best to Coen's have produced (competing with Fargo as far as I'm concerned). The script, whether it was ripped directly from the novel or not, was absolutely fantastic. I LOVED the fact that there was not a single part of the movie that had any music to it. That to me is what made the entire movie so tense, and what really brought me into the film as a whole. Mostly because in recent memory I can't think of a movie that HAS done that.

The way the story was told was really a breathe of fresh air. Especially after coming off of a binge of watching what were supposed to be some of the "best movies of the year" (Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises, 3:10 to Yuma, and American Gangster), the way everything was pieced together, and how the narrative flowed really made everything about this movie that much better.

As for the ending, I'm torn, I don't feel the movie was incomplete by any means, and I feel all loose ends in the story were tied up (whether or not they were done in a literal sense is a different story), I'm just not quite sure I understood it completely. But because of that I'm really looking forward to watching it again after I have had time to think about it. Hopefully this weekend.

An A+ film in every regard. The Coen Brothers hit a grand slam with this one.

There actually was music, but it was just incredibly subtle. It was mostly when Chigurh was on screen. The coin toss scene comes to mind. All in all, there's about 16 minutes worth of it, whether or not it's just kind of an ambient sound.

  8. I'll have to pay attention to that when I rewatch it. Because I could have sworn I never heard any, but I have no doubt you're right!

  9. Just watched this last night on blu-ray and loved it. I'm fine with the ending because the movie isn't focusing on who would get away with the loot, rather on the characters and what drives them to do what they do. I will be viewing this again over the weekend.

Yeah, there was a bit a score, but for a Coen Bros movie it was incredibly restrained. They're usually up there with Tatantino and Burton for "Hey look at me" soundtracks, but they approached this movie with a great deal of naturalism that they usually avoid, and the minimalist soundtrack went right along with that.
