Popularizing a sub genre doesn't compare to lots of things Sega did before they circled the bowl.
Pokemon brought the Gameboy back from the brink of death to become their biggest franchise, and it helped make Nintendo's portable division so profitable that it could carry them through multi-year console droughts. Your much-hated DS probably wouldn't exist as it does if Pokemon hadn't been the hit it wound up being.
Sonic should definitely be up there, and yes, an argument could be made for it being more important, but I don't think it's really clear cut. A decent argument could be made for either position.
Agreed, I'm just talking about sales here.

The only reason I used the word "important" there is because IGN's criteria made it so I couldn't use the word "better". If the list was simply 100 games based on quality alone like it should have been, it wouldn't have been a problem. Pokemon's impact would certainly qualify as important if we're going simply by that.
