I want At the Mountains of Madness so bad.

I've been re-reading it lately and I want it as well, but I'm not sure Del Toro is the one to make it. It's a very psychological thing up until near the end, and I'm not sure can do that slow build up of dread without resorting to freaks. There aren't even actual freaks in the book. Just about all of the action takes place 'off camera,' but the book is so much better for it.

I'd rather see him him Dream of Unknown Kadath, which is full of potent imagery and plenty of freaks. The big battle near the end with the ghouls versus those moon slug things would be perfect for him.

So after several months of uncertainty stemming from MGM's financial woes, this thing is finally greenlit, with PJ at the helm. Del Toro may be gone, but his fingerprints remain in the script, for which he will be credited along with PJ, Fran and Phillippa. Filming starts in february on a single long shoot for both movies, just as LOTR was done a decade and change ago, and release is set for december 2012 & '13.

Casting rumors are already circulating here, but I'm not really familiar with any of the actors named, so I can't comment much.
