Thread: Tales of Vesperia

  1. I don't understand how the battle system works.

  2. 1st off, switch your control to manual. That way you can move around more freely. I believe you go to Artes and press the back button to switch from semi-auto to manual. Use the B button to attack. X to block. A+direction to do a skill you assigned in the Artes menu. LT (or LB, I forgot which one since I haven't played since the JP demo) will let your character move around the field without having to stick to a line.

Combos mostly follow a chain of command. Normal Attack -> Base Arte -> Arcane Arte. Burst Art or Mystic Arte can also be chained at the end of the combos in Overlimit mode, but you can worry about those later after you get accustomed to everything else.

So basically, Mash B, then follow it up with an A button attack! Yuri has a lot of lagtime between attacks when not in Overlimit so try to time the attacks a little.

Tales of Eternia has the best battle system in the series, the craymel system with two mage characters is interesting, and the level design is fan-fucking-tastic. Every level was different, clever, novel. And the hand-drawn backgrounds were great.

The voice acting was abominable, and it made the characters less likable then they should have been, but the gameplay in that game is just so much fun does anything else really matter in the end?
Legendia is my least favorite in the series, but Eternia's a pretty close second. I need some kind of attachment to the characters/story in an RPG to continue playing, and the job they did with the voice acting was enough to distance me. I did end up finishing it though. :/

I'm really liking what I've seen of Vesperia so far though. I'll probably give the demo a try this weekend.

I could agree to some fault, but you seriously need to play the PS2 remake, as it turns the original into a decaying joke.

  5. I downloaded the demo recently and i do agree that yuri movements lag like hell. None of his artes moves were really helpful at all, everytime i use them; i'd get hit while executing them. For now, its just a demo and i'll have to wait and see what the final product looks like, all and all, the game looks promising.

  6. It looks beautiful. The voice acting was terrible, I hope you can turn it off.

Agreed, the voices were bleh, i hope the game allows us to change the english dialogue to japanese. If Nis can do it for atelier iris, namco bandai can do the same for Tales.

  8. This is out today! And it's been getting some pretty sweet reviews.

I'm picking it up. The LE comes with a dinky artbook and OST of Tales tracks from all the past US games (Phantasia, Symphonia, "Destiny 2", Legendia and Abyss, I think).

  9. Ugh I can't afford to buy any games so I'm going to have to let this slide for a while v.v. Let me know when any of you bastards are selling it used.
