HDMI cables are so cheap there is really no reason not to use it if you can. And if you're going to get a 1080p set, it's totally worth it.

How will that fix it? It'll just tell him he has an IP problem. It's not a diagnostic. It just tells if you can connect or not.

Yes it is. It runs through all the network settings, basically rebooting the whole thing. If I ever have a network problem, running that or the media PC link diagnostic will reset whatever it freaked out over and be good as new. Sometimes it'll fail on one the steps but just making it test again will fix it.
