So, yes I know I am a dumb god damn stupid noob, can anybody tell me how to DL the free maps for Gears of War so I can get killed by netwurked?

Or just hit the DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT button on the main menu of the game. I believe it is X.

I'm tempted to get a 360 Arcade this Christmas. Eventually I'll pick up a hard drive, but I want to know how it'll work right out of the box. Is 256MB large enough for, say, 5-10 game saves, Mega Man 9 and Castle Crashers? Is there any way that I can find out the download sizes of the various XBLA games before purchasing the console?

BTW, are memory cards all that different from thumb drives and SD cards? Is there any reason, other than greed, that MS can't release an 8gb memory card for $50?

You'll fill the card with castle crashers and Mega Man 9 alone. The cards aren't much different from a thumb drive...they won't release a card that big because they have hard drives to sell. I haven't checked prices lately, but you should be able to get a 20gig harddrive off of ebay for 50 bucks now. For $50 more you can get triple that right out of the box though (with component cables). It doesn't make sense to not get a hard drive, eventually you will need the space.
