Oh, so hey kids, Obama's not a socialist after all.
No it isn't. Go look at the stuff the ACLU has taken on. The people who dislike them or think they are biased are buying into rhetoric without actually seeing which cases they were involved in. It's always freedom of expression/assembly, equal protection, right to privacy, etc. Yeah, they've gone for a few cases like the Skokie Nazis/Ohio KKK, the Hague, the hate crime thing, too. But they're always about protecting civil liberties.
Don't look at the stuff they've done in the name of the Establishment Clause as liberal/commie/whatever because it isn't. The same goes for the race-related equal protection things. And the early stuff they took on regarding Communism was due to the U.S. trying to limit free speech and free association.
Isn't it the people that are supposed to be equal? Supporting a specific cause isn't somehow non-egalitarian because you aren't supporting every cause. You're confusing your rhetoric. I think most people would, in fact, value certain rights over others.
The important thing about rights is that they're applied equally to everyone. That's what makes them rights. Beyond that, I don't see your point here.
No, I'm painting them as the best store in town, with plenty of granola emporiums in the neighborhood. But if you know a better place...Decent suggestions for solving the granola issue, but it doesn't change the fact you're painting an anti-granola grocery store as all-inclusive.
What civil liberties groups do you think support the causes that ACLU supports as well as they do? I ask earnestly because it's a cause I'm passionate about, and I'd be interested to know.
I'm not asking for your tax returns, but if you support a cause, why would you be ashamed to acknowledge it in a discussion?Yes, I protest every assumption you make. And how I spend my money is none of your fucking business. But if it were, and if I were inclined to share, you would be surprised.
It's none of my business who you're voting for either, but you have no problem putting that in your signature. It's an open forum, why hide about a charitable cause you believe in? If it looks good, maybe you'd end up turning more people onto it.

This thread is taking a nose dive.
This "redistribution of wealth" being tagged as some wacky new socialist movement is driving me up a fucking wall. You'd think some of these conservatives have never heard of tax brackets before.
in soviet russia, wealth redistributes you.

If I had millions of dollars I worked hard for and someone wanted to take most of that away (like they take away from my pitiful salary) I'd be pretty mad, too. Run this damn country with less of my tax dollars.
Sure, when we're out of debt. But someone has to pay for keeping Russia off our ass and Halliburton's fun in Iraq.

I'm of the belief that if our Founders saw it as important enough to place in the Bill of Rights, it must be pretty fucking important. And it's rather telling that the causes the ACLU do champion happen to line up in neat, political rows. So curious...
But it's not just granola. They don't sell patchouli, either. Or Birkenstocks. See a trend developing? No, I'm painting them as the best store in town, with plenty of granola emporiums in the neighborhood. But if you know a better place...
I get enough grief as it is being a political independent. This isn't an "open forum;" it's a forum where you can feel open to tow the Democratic party line, or be forever labeled a Republican by default. It's a forum where you can feel open to blindly hop aboard the rhetoric of one candidate, and if you don't, you're a covert operative for the other candidate by default.I'm not asking for your tax returns, but if you support a cause, why would you be ashamed to acknowledge it in a discussion?

I'll leave my charitable works and contributions to myself, thanks. I might be one jaded motherfucker, but we're now getting into things that actually mean something to me, and I would rather not drag them through the TNL venom machine if it's all the same.
