Fred Thompson got in one dragon punch on Huckabee; other than that he didn't say anything of note. Ron Paul certainly didn't win either, as he just continued to parrot the whole isolationism thing. Huckabee spent most of the debate trying to pander to the crowd, McCain made a lot of good points but unfortunately seemed really old and maybe a little senile at times.
I think Rudy won pretty decisively; he shot down the whole "he's not a real conservative" knock by arguing that traditional conservatism is about strong economic and defense policies rather than social issues. He further argued that the Republican party is doomed if it continues to hitch it's wagons to social positions on abortion and gay rights. He came out of the debate as the most electable candidate on the dais.
It's the last 8 years that bother me in particular. We were on the right track with Clinton for a while.
It's not so much a stereotype as a statistical fact. And it's not based on empty promises, it's based on a priority toward social programs that benefit the working class and struggling members of society.
And also republicans are generally seen as the party of racist crackers, which is probably not entirely unfounded.
Also, population density is the strongest indicator of a region's political affiliation, and guess where black people live? It helps to not have to see your neighbor, or any of societies problems on a daily basis if you want to vote republican.
