Thread: The Forgotten Disney Feature Animations Thread

More recently, Teacher's Pet is actually a really interesting watch, if for no other reason than getting fully animated Gary Baseman paintings running around. Nathan Lane's voice gets really grating really fast, but the look of the movie is completely unique.

The Black Cauldron has this reputation as being a 'lost classic', unfortunately it's a bit undeserved. There's quite a bit of really nice moments of character animation, but the movie looks very muddy and doesn't really have any kind of coherent story. The production history is really pretty interesting on it, though. First use of CGI in a Disney flick, too. There are reports that the director was literally going senile throughout the production. O__O

I've never seen Teachers Pet I'll have to look for it.

I'm torn on Black Cauldron cause it was the first movie my parents took me to see in an actual movie theater and I'd say it's a strong reason why I'm an animator today. I can see all it's flaws, and there are a lot of them, especially in the production quality. That said though I can't hate on the film, and it did go through some crazy production shit. I had no heard of the director going senile throughout the production before though.

Those are definitely not lost classics. I don't know a lot of their early 80s stuff is forgotten about, pretty much till you hit Little Mermaid.

I think Saludos Amigos, and Three Caballeros are underappreciated.
These would definitely count, 3 Caballeros is awesome stuff. Some really nice animation in there too.

I know it makes them shit tons of money cause they re-release shit every couple of years but seriously FUCK the Disney vault. Its why I don't own Sleeping Beauty (one of my favorite pieces ever) on DVD I just can't put down the 40 + bucks used it goes for. Same with quite a few of their other releases.

According to my dad, the first theatrical movie I was ever awake for as a child was "Aliens".

Lemme also recommend "The Rescuers", the first film of what was supposed to be the "Third Golden Age" of Disney animated features (followed up by Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron). I think most of us saw Rescuers Down Under, with it's boring blond kid teaming up with a fucking gigantic Golden Eagle, but the original is actually a pretty neat piece of animated film. Ollie Johnson, Frank Thomas, John Lounsbery, Milt Kahl AND Don Bluth worked on this one. Great character acting throughout.

More of a short than a feature, but "Micky's Brain" is FANTASTIC, and is rarely seen. It's really suprisingly good. It's even got videogaming in it.
It's a lot more violent and scary than the normal Micky Mouse fare, and is very nicely animated. Check it out!

3 Caballeros and Great Mouse Detective are definitely awesome, black cauldron is just sort of "Meh".

I'm one of those who likes Down Under better than Rescuers.
    Pete DeBoer's Tie
There are no rules, only consequences.

  4. Down Under is really slick too. I enjoy Johanna the lizard.

Does A Goofy Movie hold up as badly as I suspect? I really liked it when I was a kid.

  5. Down under stands out as a Disney sequel that's actually good.

  6. The Great Mouse Detective is one of my alltime favorites, also weren't there 3 Rescuer movies? I know I loved one and two but for some reason I keep thinking their is a 3.

  7. I've never seen The 3 Cabelleros, I've always wanted to though.

I'm not really sure what counts as "lost" thoughl. I need titles.

My favorite Disney movie is Lady and the Tramp btw.

  8. Not exactly lost, but certainly understated, is The Aristocats.

I have not seen it, however.

  9. I feel like most Disney movies are really well known, save for the few made after Bambi and Before Cinderella (Saludos Amigos, Three Cabelleros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time, Te Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad--I haven't seen any of these). But the rest seem pretty widely regarded. Does Sword in the Stone count? If it does then I suppose that's my favorite lesser known Disney movie.

Really I would say the only ones that would qualify as understated are The Sword and the Stone, The Aristocats, The Rescuers (Down Under), The Fox and the Hound, and The Great Mouse Detective. Then the newer stuff that nobody saw like Treasure Planet, Home on the Range and Atlantis.

  10. I always felt that between Treasure Planet and Titan AE, you'd have one good movie. They both fail hard, though.
