Thread: Are you ready? It's cool! Let's enjoy a great showtime!!

  1. I agree with Apokryphos, granted I don't have as much understanding as he does, but I know more depth lies under the chaos.

  2. I just wish I had more people to play against so as to improve my skills (the only people I know who'll play it prefer Project Justice, so I usually can't get too much out of them for this game).

Learning the different tricks and combos are a blast to me, as are the character designs (took me forever to realize that Venom's "face mask" was actually his hair), and I love a lot of them. Sol Badguy, Chipp, Ky Kiske, Dizzy, Johnny (I don't really like how he plays that much, but I love his look), Axl's kinda cool, and the almighty Millia Rage (my favorite character). There's also a nurse added in for the Wonderswan GGX, Fanny, and I'm hoping they add her into the main game series at some point.

While not as deep as SFIII, it provides a nice distraction when I'm looking for something more combolicious, but don't feel like messing with the madness of the too-crazy MvC2.

  3. I'd say Johnny plays alot like Ryuji Yamazaki from KOF/FF. Has that defensive/offensive sword and some cool uppercut type attacks.

He sure does, but I don't like playing Yamazaki, either. But it's still nice to have that different style of fighting for those who choose so, and Johnny's got some great attacks (like his in-the-air flame spear that drops down, and the tossing coins bit). I'm just usually not as much of a hang-back kind of fighter, because I'm usually going up against fierce attackers, and don't have the ability to really pull off moves that need reach and time. Need to work on that...

  5. Guilty Gear X...

I was really looking forward to the game (having been a huge fan of the first Guilty Gear), but was actually quite disappointed. The music is still quite awesome, but it's not at the same level as GG's ("Beyond the Darklife" is just too damned good). Also, the health guage system is just plain silly. As the health bar gets shorter, it gradually gets harder and harder to do damage... If you hit an opponent with an attack, and they have full health, you may do 10% damage. If they only have 33% health, the same attack will barely dent their health bar. It's just plain silly when you're craziest Chip combo just slowly tickles them to death, when they could've just increased the health all-around, and made it more consistent.

The game's not terrible, but it's also not awesome. Capcom makes much better fighting games.

There's only one way to play that game - attack, juggle, repeat - and the only real difference after a while seems to be what buttons you push in the air.

GGX controls better than CvS2, if you ask me (not that you did). The CvS series has been such a huge let down for me personally.
I hear a lot of people denounce MvC2 as nothing more than cheap. I guess I am fortunate to have played against some really great, non-cheap players up here in State College over at Playland--one of the last great arcades around...

Anyway, I have seen some amazing things, sure there's the guy that uses Magneto and Psylocke and combos you on the ground, has Psylocke pick you up, jumps into the air and does an infinite, but that's some amazing stuff in my book.

The thing is you can do air combos w/ even the biggest characters--Sentinel is awesome and you can easily rack up a 10+ hit air combo (add his super on to the end of it)...Juggy is great for ari combos also...Collosus...just tack on his throw move at the end of the air combo for some serious damage...but you can be amazing and never use an air combo...that's the fun of it...you can easily rack up a ground combo just as big...or play theme games...or play just to pull off a certain super...there's so much diversity...it's overwhelming...

I guess what I'm saying is, I stand by this game as one of the better fighters to ever hit the arcade...I've seen people whoop Cable with little Servebot...I've seen (and experienced) some amazing things in this game and only a few times did I actually feel that the players were cheap in their victory (like if you bring out support and they manage to kill your main character and then use a character like Magneto to just keep using his pop-up to keep your support from ever returning, thus killing him and ending the match)...

I still love this game and will always love it for the amount of fun you can have...not all really good players are cheap...not everyone uses Cable, Strider, etc...and you know what? You can beat these characters even w/ Servebot...you just have to master the game...and know each characters weaknesses, etc...

As for CvS2--I am just beginning to see the depth to this game...I actually got air juggled the other day (by the always pesky Sakura)...I didn't think it was possible in this game...it is...just not the same way as in MvC2...I mean this game is technical...you can roll cancel into a super move...you can parry every single attack...you can chain supers to pull-off some amazing moves...

It's a shame there aren't more arcades around...that's where you see the amazing stuff...I wouldn't even know have the stuff that's possible unless I saw some kid pull it off in the arcade first...and as far as watching tournament videos...of course the matches are often cheap...you're there to win...hit a local arcade if you want to see kids just playing and trying out different things...

Also use different characters...if you come at someone w/Servebot or BB Hood, they are more likely to try other characters against you...if you come at someone with Cable, Juggy, Magneto, etc...they are more likely to do the same...

So I may stand in the minority, but these two games are definitely the pinacle of 2-D fighting (and yes I also feel that there are many amazing SNK games as well...) and neither of them are "broken" as so many of you put it...

-I've played MvC2 for like 2 years straight, and maybe you have a weird definition of "technical" but GGX is *way* more technical than MvC2. My guess is you're someone that knows all the glitches in MvC2, knows how to exploit them, and considers those techniques. Well, not quite.

GGX seems to have a little something from just about every 2D fighter out there:

    -Chain combos, links, 2-in-1s
    -Super, Instant Kills
    -Instant Block, Faultless Defense
    -double and triple jumps, air-dashing
    -counters, reversals, tech-hit/tech-roll
-attacking downed opponents (and not just with a VS-like pounce)
-!!jump canceling!! (cancelling an attack animation with a jump)
    -Roman Cancels

Not to mention the advanced stamina and damage system plus much more.

Only Milia and Sol can directly combo into a launcher (not a Dust Attack), but everyone can lauch with a dust attack (which hits "overhead"), and plenty of characters can create sick, extended combos with Roman Cancels and Jump Cancelling. Also, about the positioning game and strategy; initially, players may just find themselves airdashing and rushing their opponents all match long, and for some characters like Chipp and Milia, this remains an effective strategy even at advanced levels. But most characters control space with the projectiles and "summons". Venom, Testament, Dizzy and Zato are all good examples of characters who can "set up" the environment and lure the opponent into traps (sorta MvC2 style). Characters like Axel and May are good at zoning and ranged attack, while Milia and Chipp are your speed/combo freaks. Baiken is a defense/counter attack specialist, Sol and Ky are sorta the Ryu/Ken straight-forward bruisers, and ol' Potemkin is the slow, methodical big-guy. ...Faust...well, Faust is just "special". Anyway, I'm just trying to point out that all the characters have generally unique ways of approaching a battle and controlling space at advanced levels.

On top of all that, I think the graphics and character design are great, and the animation is generally pretty slick (but not always consistently). Hit detection and control is definitely better than CvS2, but doesn't seem as crisp as SF3, or maybe even MotW (I think the DC pad accounts for most my sloppiness in *that* game).

Anyway, not trying to change opinions necessarily, but I just think there's alot more to the game then people want to acknowledge. It certainly has all the stylings to be a cult classic like the Darkstalker series. Maybe they'll even incorporate EX moves

All in all, I'm eagerly anticipating GGXX, if only for the new characters.
Man! I said I liked it! What do you want, blood?!

Maybe I should give it some serious play time then. I never play it as my friends think it's a joke (I don't. They do). So I never really got into it. Lemme see what I can do.

  9. I've been reading the story, but it's the import version, so I don't get half of it. Like, why are all the Japanese people dead? And why are the few that survived treated so specially? Who's the guy behind the gears? Am I supposed to know? Why the heck is Faust able to do all those weird things? As near as I can tell, it just says he went nuts, not turned into a cartoon. And why the hell is Sol Badguy's favourite band Queen? Doesn't that pretty much negate him being a tough guy? And what's the deal with "magic has been harnessed" - are the gears magical? Or is everyone? And what the hell kind of name is Ky Kiske?

And what's up with the endings - do you have to win without continuing to get one that's not just a single screen?

The story itself seems really cool, but it'd be nice if I understood more of it.

That last sentence is what drives me nuts about that game - I hate the roll cancelling glitch. I also don't like the fact that the Mark of the Wolves and SF3 grooves are pretty worthless because there isn't enough animation to read where to parry; you're mostly guessing. I also despise the wack-ass priorities in that game - standing jab defeats all.

Add in the fact that so many SNK characters feel really wrong, like Kyo, Yamazaki, and Vice, and you have a game that makes me long for what could have been. Maybe next installment.
