What is 'real'? If 'real' is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

I know what you are really saying here, but I'm going to be a snide bastard and accuse you of not believing in most modern science because of this statement.

I hope TNL watched to the end of this...the final 30 secs are comedy platinum.

  6. He just seemed like any other preacher trying to sell their philosophies to others. Legitimate passion these days seems to scare the apathetic. Not that Scientology isn't completely crazy. On the positive note Scientology does seem to have a lot of good go-getters when it comes to writing. It may seem crazy but at least it's new. I'm tired of all of these boring Islamic suicide bombers. I wonder what the Scientologist martyrs will come up with. Whatever it is it'll be pretty zany I bet!

I believe in God but it's not like I wouldn't be somebody or successful without that faith. It's more of a fascination with the unknown for me. It doesn't keep me going during the day. I go to a Christian Church because I like to take my grandma and go out to lunch. But all in all it's just a personal curiosity for me. I also believe that through science we understand more about what a God could have created. If you were the almighty ruler of the universe do you think learning about the world around you would be an insult or the ultimate compliment about existence from the people you created? Why would it bother you? There seems to be this great Christian philosophy going around that they have to shelter God from the knowledge science brings. Why? That's the most idiotic stance on understanding that I could ever think of. And that corruption is what makes me dislike religion and shift towards a more broad perception of God. I'm not sure what you call my views on religion or what category I'm shoe-horned in. I don't know if I have a designation.

I'm not talking about Intelligent Design either -- it's just another way Christianity is trying to shelter people and supposedly protect a God they claim is almighty. As if an almighty God would need that. If a God does exist there's no way we would ever be able to comprehend it/he/she. And if we're alone that's fine too. It doesn't bother me.

I think that has more to do with insecurities of particular groups rather than Christianity as a whole. Example, I feel like the intelligent design movement is a fucking trainwreck, personally. I was never raised with that, and never encountered it personally until recently, outside of certain Southern Baptist family members (at 5 years old, I was calling bullshit on "dinosaurs on the Ark"). But, many groups insist on shoehorning the bible into an umbrella for their science-phobia, and trying their damnedest to instill that into their children and communities. Is this a universal trend throughout the religion? Fuck no. Reflects badly on the whole thing, though, as highly-vocal group would tend to.

    Horrible, corrosive trend.

I see it as a matter of power and authority.

The dinosaur thing and the evolution thing puts genesis to debate. Which in turn puts the whole bible to debate for the "EVERYTHING is the inspired word of God" crowd.

If the entire bible is up for debate, no one group can claim authority with it, reasonably.

On a much smaller scale, it is kind of like people figuring out that the king wasn't really appointed by God and divine right was BS.
