I think MarkRyan is just bitter about GTA3 being the runaway success that MGS2 was supposed to be.
Incidentally, the 2D GTA games didn't have the wide variety of side missions that were present in GTA3. I think that nonessential things like firefighting, importing/exporting cars, and learning to fly the Dodo were instrumental in making the game's world seem that much more real and exciting. The move to 3D was also important due to all of the exploration aspects that really weren't present or feasible in the previous titles.

But I do have a grudge against the MGS series for everyone and their mother thinking that they can (and should) make stealth games. Or shoehorn stealth elements into other games. That makes me very, very angry.
Still, the MGS series is great, and... OH.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - They're remaking MGS1 with MGS2-style controls and graphics! What wonderful news! And... the end result was slightly less than satisfactory. Though I am eternally thankful for the dog tag, my grudge has to do with the fact that assholes get into the series and pick this turd up thinking it's equivalent to the PS1 version. The Ryuhei Kitamura cutscenes may be cool, but they ruin the tone of the game. And the new music? Terrible. It did more wrong than it did right, and I wish Konami would do it again someday. Properly. Without Silicon Knights.

I don't even dislike GTA3, but MarkRyan is right. It's a broken game more important for its influence than its innovation.
It's only broken on console. Play it on a real system.
