I can't believe he'd be ok with doing only 4 seasons. I know you don't want to drag on the show, but 4 seems way too soon to end things - that's next season.

The writers on this show could probably keep it going for seven without a drop in quality though, goddamn are they good.

Lost is exceptional for a network show, but network shows in general just can't compete with cable.

I don't think this is true. Lost is a funny show because it tricked people in to watching sci-fi. When people realized it was sci-fi they turned in to crybabies. That's lulz to me. Lost itself wasn't what people thought it would be - a dramatic Gilligan's Island (which most people joked it was).

But the themes, and characterization in Lost are all still very, very good -- mystery plot aside. (I'd give Mad Men and Breaking Bad the lead over Lost without question) And they still aren't shy about killing off characters to further the story, which makes it fun to watch.
