Walt would have been busted a long time ago if it wasn't for Skyler. After he finally came clean she used her knowledge to launder the money and stay under the radar. The $600k she lost doesn't really matter in the end. Walt set a number to achieve, passed it and greed has completely taken over. He won't stop no matter how much is under the house.

He never finished working for Gus and he's had some crazy expenses along the way that were unavoidable or not his choosing. They'd be long gone if not for Skylar buying the dude she fucked a new car with Walts money.
