    Buy mine.

  4. I bought Galaxy Fight for $5 today. I always wanted to try it ever since I drooled over it in Gamefan back when. I can't believe how well animated it is! This game came out like 14 years ago and it animates better than half the 2D games of the last few years. Actually, probably more than half since those are mostly all DS games.

Too bad the actual game play"s stuck in the SFII Turbo stone age, though. I would have loved the shit out of this back in 1995.

Also: WTF at the big breasted bunny girl sex object being 8 years old. Yeah, I know it says "but that works out to 16 in human years" but you all still totally know why they put that number in there. You sick bastards.

There's this weird graininess to the sprite outlines that drives me nuts, and I'm not feeling the 3 tier playfield thing that never worked in Fatal Fury. It's decent fun, kept my interest for a while and I'll finish it, but I don't think this is like 2D's grand swan song or anything like it's often portrayed as.
I'm sure a number of things about it don't hold up as well these days, but I can say among the things I loved it for were how it had a story that progressed based on your choices (instead of the usual "Your girlfriend's been kidnapped. Go get her," and that's all you ever get), the tons of varied level backdrops with those paths means it takes a bunch of playthroughs to see them all, and the amount of upgradable special attacks. You could end up with a final boss that's a regular guy or a god up in heaven, depending on how you want to handle things.

You might also want to check out the debug code just so that you can use my favorite character without going through the trouble of unlocking her normally (Serena) as well as being able to see and use the powered up spells right off. I remember it being a pain in the butt to input, however, as it requires some perfect timing in the option menus.

p.s. Find someone else to play with, too. Any good beat 'em up is better multiplayer.
p.p.s. You haven't played Fighter's Megamix until you've unlocked the Daytona Car and the AM2 tree and had them do battle. Get on that if you haven't yet.

I'm also on board with NeoZeed regarding Burning Rangers: Seeing it today will make your eyes bleed, the draw distance is like five feet and the polygons warp and undulate like melting belly dancers. But it's still a great game and you should check it out (I rescued every one of those fuckers, and is one of the save files I was the most pissed about losing when the battery died).

I'd also like to toss in a recommendation for Silhouette Mirage, which is one of my favorite Saturn games.

i agree. who would have thought localizing it for the PS1 could have made it such a different game.

  7. i found a system on ebay that has an s-video mod right in the back of the system. didnt they sell s-video cables for the system in the stores? i thought it did s-video already.

I swear the Outrun/Space Harrier/Afterburner collection WD brought out did not have a perfect conversion of Outrun. There are some roadsigns missing from the arcade. I checked this against Mame. I don't know if the Japanese version of Outrun was any different, probably not.

  9. Sure, I'm not closing the book on Guardian Heroes or anything. It's important to note that every opinion I'm expressing in this thread so far is of the knee-jerk variety; I've got a stack of almost 70 games that I only got on weekend so do the math on how much quality time I've spent with these things.

I've got a mountain of fmv digital mystery novel type things I haven't even got to yet - I tried the first one tonight -

Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo: Hoshimito Kanashimi no fukushuu(Boy Kindaichi's Casefile: Starwatch Island Mournful Revenge Demon or some stupid shit) Holy fuck, what a title. It's like this anime boy detective with a ponytail who solves crimes with all these tuxedo mask demon sailor moon villains that look like crypto-rapists. It's very much in the same mold as a Snatcher type game, except with high school kids & shit. It's actually not badly done, with some nice animated sequences (let me guess, they ripped it straight out of a seperately released OVA?) and visuals, but adventure-boy crime solving time in Japanese is probably not how I'm going to spend my free time.

OTOH, while I agree with MechDeus about the possibilities due to the branching storylines, the problem with Guardian Heroes is that the gameplay isn't particularly special. It's a beat 'em up fused with some light fighter game moves fused with a RPG level up system (a design flaw in an action game if you ask me). If you like beat 'em ups, then GH would probably be great. But it really doesn't change or evolve the formula. It is my least favorite Treasure game because of that.

Radiant Silvergun is like Evangelion in that everyone should experience it. Not everyone will like what it is, but it is truly different than what you might originally think when seeing a screenshot. And there's no other game that plays the same out there.
