I definitely like the Jag for the games you mentioned and some others but I had much higher hopes for it than it delivered given that -

    - I was aware the system since the rumours of the 32-bit "Panther" system years earlier. Atari was taking so long developing it, I figured it had some good comeback plan since they skipped a whole console gen. Tramiel was talking about the system, and how they had plans to attract third-parties. I really didn't think they would repeat past mistakes.

    - The Lynx, despite being a commercial failure, had a steady supply of impressive games. It made up for small quantity with quality. To this day, I would easily pick the Lynx over the Jag.

    - I thought the 3d capabilities of the system would have been used better. Virtua Racing on 32X destroys the Jag's polygon racers, and it's not the hardware's fault.

    - AvP was good but it was probably the first case of console-only gamers overhyping a "corridor" game because they weren't aware of superior PC games in the genre.

    - Rayman got overhyped as well, and ended up being multi-format anyway. It's a solid game but magazines made it out to be in Mario and Sonic's league.

    - Raiden was billed as "arcade perfect". It was a good port but definitely not arcade quality.

  2. I think the biggest problem with the Jag was, right before launch, Atari stripped away most of its RAM to save money. (I remember Quartermann announcing that and comparing it to castrating a bull.) That makes the games look far worse than they should. And a lot of the better looking games have no music, using the RAM for the graphics.

    Nice revision.

  5. Christ, go to atari-age and you will be able to read about the many, many reasons that the Jag failed to reach it's potential. Crappy dev kits, crappy budgets for games, developers not being paid for games, the Jag had a lot going against it. I prefer the 3DO over it by far, but there is a few games that I just have to have, so the Jag stays with me.

  6. while i never owned one (for obvious reasons) i would have to say the CD-i was the biggest letdown ever. so many rumors of an SNES cd add-on, then Nintendo goes with Phillips and turns away from SONY. anybody that walked into a SEARS or saw the infomertials could tell you it was a trainwreck from the start.

i will however always have a soft spot for both the Jaguar and 3DO.

  7. I've owned a CDi on many occasions. While I would never classify it as a must own console, like all "shitty" consoles, there are good games and good times to be had. You just have to look for them.

  8. In hindsight I have a big soft spot for the disasters of the mid-90's (32X, Jaguar, Lynx, etc.)

Yep. Still has the what is possibly the only good FMV based game ever, Burn-Cycle.

The Jaguar is the only system I've sold that I wish I still had. There were several games for it that were severe letdowns though.

Speaking of, what's the scene on Jag emulation?

I also remember a few of the early third party N64 games 'feeling' like Jag stuff.
