Can you get things by him? If he's not being useful just bypass him completely, hell do things you think will be a good idea, and if they work fantastic, if not you get your firing.

If you're already this miserable, it's time to do what you think is right yourself, and if costs you your job, you have lost nothing you care about. If it works, and improves things you're happier. It's practically a win/win unless you are concerned you won't be able to find another job ever again.

On the matter of a job hunt, you should consider looking at other cities.

That's the problem. I don't know what is right. I am the project. I don't know how it actually happened. The fact that I am conversant and capable of critical thought meant I won by default. I just walked through the door. This wasn't even the job.

Before you know it I was...I dunno. People are just too cheap to hire an actual project manager. I am not a project manager. I don't know if that means I failed or didn't fail. I literally have no idea what happened.

So I go in tomorrow and keep pushing. "We're getting close"....again to which I say, "To what?"

There is no management here. I read articles online. It reminds me of that Forbes (I think it was Forbes) article that was like, "WELL IF I WAS POOR I'D GO TO THE LIBRARY AND USE THE PC AND BE SMART". Your healthy office steps and project management steps work in places where that stuff is taken somewhat seriously.

I don't know you as a person so this is just supposition; but the fact you haven't gotten an answer implies to me that you aren't being forceful enough. Have you ever put a little anger into your voice when you ask him what the hell he's talking about?

Because it sounds like he thinks your competent (which is good!) and that you won't stand up for yourself (bad). I really don't know though since I don't know the guy personally. Perhaps you're just in a situation where there is really nothing to add to it, and this guy is just trying to keep you along for as long as possible because you're good at it.

That is the problem I have (I am not forceful at all). But the problem is that he is in zero position to tell me if I am doing well or not. And I don't mean it in some conceited way. It's like if your grandma said, "Wow, you are good at basketball, maybe you can play in the NBA one day" with no frame of reference whatsoever.

So I tell him it means nothing (and feel somewhat bad about it because his intentions are probably good) and then show him the things I am having trouble with. "Well, we're getting close though, right?"

Instead of taking it out on him, I just get defeated because...well...you didn't understand a thing I said, boss. Well, let me try to show you.

I can't even explain the damn thing. That is why I think I just might have gone a bit crazy. Like some Twilight Zone episode.
