You keep saying "thought crime" like possession of child pornography is in and of itself not a big deal. Whether or not you're abusing children is irrelevant (although obviously, one is often a stepping stone to the other); having child porn of any kind is a serious fucking crime that's indicative of a major psychological problem. And unless there's some massive wave of false accusations of pedophilia against innocent people going around, I'm not even sure what the fuck it is you're trying to argue with that paranoid "the police could put it on your computer!" horseshit.

Edit: Has anyone mentioned yet that this douchebag's job put him in intimate contact with children on a daily basis? And that he had 100,000 images and 10,000 videos on his computer? That come up yet?

I see this as something with 3 real levels to it:

1) You're sexually attracted to children, there is very little you can do about this without going to a psychiatrist which I imagine would be a pretty scary thing. But you keep it to yourself and never do anything so really, it's not a problem. Just like you think shitting on your bosses desk would be funny, sure it would be, but you know not to do it.

2) You start downloading pictures, you'd neeeever ever harm a child yourself. This is true, you never will great. But getting these pictures just says "Go ahead and keep uploading them, I won't do it, but it's great that you'll do it for me and put them online for me. I'm not really hurting anyone, you are." It's pretty bad, though I'd imagine it is one of those things you can train yourself to think that what you're doing isn't wrong because you're not doing it. I don't think this is necessarily a stepping stone to someone raping a child depending on how they're wired. Like watching videos of people getting mutilated or rape (even fake rape) doesn't mean you're going to go out and rape someone. It may be attractive to you, but the barrier is HUGE. I'd imagine it's incredibly easy to go from steps 1 and 2, and incredibly difficult to go that third step. When you can convince yourself you're not hurting anyone, and when you are directly responsible for hurting someone. That's something I'd like to think most of us don't take lightly, and I think most people take it pretty seriously.

The problem with child porn is that every kid is a victim. It's not like regular porn which is a business transaction between consenting adults. It's fucked up shit and no, it is not an acceptable outlet for a person who is sexually attracted to children.

As an aside, given the choice between being sexually attracted to children or being dead, I'd take the latter.

As far as the law in concerned, ped hentai books, 16 year olds sending each other nudes on their phone, and uncle buck taking pictures of his nude 12 year old spreading it, are all the same.

That is how this is a thought crime. It is the thought that is illegal. The law doesn't give a shit about the reality of it. It doesn't care how it came to be.
