Thread: What's Bugging You Today? Volume 3, Part 1

  1. Actually, "myriad of" is fine. But "was" in this case is wrong.

  2. Chux's sentence is grammatically sound.

There was a myriad of other things going on.

There was a group of noobs correcting Chux's grammar on TNL.

''Group'' in that sentence and ''myriad'' in Chux's are collective nouns that inherit singular verbs.

If he had used ''myriad'' as an adjective, as in ''There were myriad things going on,'' then ''were'' would be correct.

    I hate all of you.

  4. I thought about that as I posted and I'm still not sure about it ;p

There was a ton of stuff going on
There were a ton of things going on

Supposedly, this is what Merriam-Webster says:

A collective noun followed by “of” and a plural noun (sometimes called a partitive group) follows the same notional agreement as collective nouns in general. When the plurality is stressed, the verb is plural: “there were a ton of seagulls… that group of teenagers were…”

?? So maybe bad grammar has become acceptable ;p

  5. "A ton'' is a versatile phrase, so it's not the best litmus test to see if your subjects and verbs are agreeing. It's actually doing different jobs in those sentences, working as a collective noun (a group, a myriad) in the first and a modifier (a dozen, a thousand) in the second.

Edit: maybe ''a myriad'' can be used as a modifier or a collective noun? It can literally mean ''ten thousand'' according to dictionary.com.

I have a suspicion that we are all right and a stronger suspicion that we are all faggots.

You're missing the point - there's a tipping point where dealing with your self-entitled ass is no longer worth the amount of shit pay you're willing to fork over for your intent to string me along for hundreds of hours of work. I suppose the other analogies have one big difference - jobs that can be considered done because there's a finite, measurable end result. I could do something for you, and knowing you, you'll whimper that oh, it's the wrong color, or oh, this change will only take an extra minute (or 600)...you wouldn't be able to go back with a pair of jeans, bitch that you don't like the stitching, and get them to tear it apart, make you a new one, and do it without charging one extra cent.

So it's not "OH MAN HERE'S THIS DICK SO PRIDEFUL THAT HE WON'T TAKE $1 AN HOUR AND BE HAPPY WHAT A COCK" it's "HOLY SHIT I COULD DEAL WITH ONE LESS OF YOU AND MAKE ENOUGH TO MAKE RENT IN THE SAME SPAN OF TIME IT WOULD TAKE TO GET NOWHERE ON A PROJECT WITH YOU? YAH LETS DO THAT"

You can't expect someone to take doodling seriously.
I can if that someone is too lazy to it for themselves. Any job is just something a person has elected to not learn and do for their own, which is why commerce is commerce. I doodle for those who won't, a plumber fixes for those who aren't handymen.

    Whatever.

You shouldn't be surprised when jobs fall through if you produce mostly the same work as others for the same price as others. Nobody is going to jump out of their seat to pay the going rate for anything.

If you want to get the job before someone else, you have to give some kind of incentive.

So ok, you want to be a professional and charge the professional rate. Ok, whatever. You're just another professional. Don't be surprised when people shop around and you don't get the work. Thats what happens to "professionals"

  10. Actually, I tend to undercut others by about 10% or more. Which is why I'm incensed that someone would balk at the rate.

And YEAH, if I charge like a professional its because the level of work I offer is professional. Hypothetically, you could charge $1/hr to the same clients I quote and they'll get what they pay for - shit work from someone who doesn't know what the fuck they're doing and taking forever to do it.

Not to mention there are more incentives than just lower cost. If a designer is cheaper but ducks out on every contact a client sends, or sends revisions without changing anything hoping you don't notice, or doesn't save the layout for a plate process so a printer can actually use it, then I can leverage the fact that I'd be a better guy to work with.
