That's why I wet the tip and twist it into a long filament, and just gently twirl it around.
Granted, my ears haven't produced hard wax since I was a kid, so I only use it to deal with itchy ears when it's really dry, but it's too flimsy to really compact anything. It could jiggle something loose, though. Just a thought.
