Thread: RIAA wants Spyware on your PC

  1. you know there is plenty of legally free music (like most anything nerd core) that use tours and merch to pay the artists rather than payin a record corp through the nose for so much useless overhead.

    I used to be all fuck the RIAA, nowadays there's little reason to have any contact with anyone associated with them. I can count on one hand the artists i still care about that i'd buy records from a big label. I've moved on.

    The MPAA is another deal tho. Even though they're two heads of the same beast.

    Not at this point. The RIAA coming into the spotlight through this shit has made it so fans recognize it for the predatory entities it was. Before this, most people really didn't know.

  3. Most people's concerns with them are related to how they keep pushing DRM and go after file sharing sites/programs/people. If they backed off of those things the amount of people complaining would be a lot smaller. As it is, the main issues seem to be about finding viable business models for fans that are less likely to have bought/buy the music they're listening to, and how digital distribution should be approached. Finding solutions for either of those things probably won't put an end to shitty contracts.

    Putting an end to shitty labels will put an end to shitty contracts.

    Exactly. Touring/merchandise is where most bands make their dough. The CD is just a promotional item more or less to get people to come to the shows.

    Problem is what's called "contracts of adhesion" records corps generally will, at the time of signing have a much stronger position in negotiations than the band ever will. They cannot effectively shop around or negotiate their contract (other than refusing and not getting a contract). The contract that they get will be one that heavily favors the company, and probably has held up on court before while the band is 2-7 people, none of which have legal training and DO need to be paid.

    Its not shitty labels but simply how business is done with everyone
