At the resolution & screen size we are talking about, more polygons than what the Wii could handle is not a big deal IMO.
The issue is effects, though. The Wii does not support programmable shaders. This is like, 2000 GPU design. That's what led to my comment above. Unless Nintendo specifically asks ATI or whomever for a GPU as lame as the Wii's, it is virtually impossible for them to get one. This would, I think, mean the system could actually do more than even the Cube.
Correct me if I am wrong, but don't tell Nintendo.
