I think it's pretty safe to say that any [Taito Franchise]: Revolution is terrible at this point. Prove me wrong, Taito. Prove. Me. Wrong.
The hype got to me. I'm buying this today.
SI: Revolution is awful. It's the most lazy SI cash grab I've seen. Instead of going for a high score, you take on missions set in pre-rendered real-world locales, which involve facing down three themed waves (giant, really tiny, a thin arena, etc). It's really boring.
The only marginally interesting aspect of the game is way it links up with the included original Space Invaders - high scores in the original SI will unlock powerups in SI Revolution. Still, it's trash. Don't waste your time or money on it.
Space Invaders Extreme is my GOTY so far.

I just noticed your sig. LOL.
This isn't my GOTY, but it's good. If I really had to pick, it's looking up at GTA4 and GRID. Maybe NG2, but I haven't played it enough.
I don't have a GOTY yet. Space Invaders is great, and GTAIV is fun if a step backwards for the series, but nothing's really hit me as "Yes! This is it!"

damn you guys, i wasnt going to pick up a game until i finished mgs4, but that paddle looks killer
This is good. Really good. I haven't figured out all of the scoring nuances yet -- I don't know what a Break is and I'm not quite sure how the Fever Time scoring works -- but I'm already addicted.
My problem with most shooters that imply similar chaining systems is that there's too much memorization and not enough improvisation. SI:E's one-screen-at-a-time format tips the scales, though; memorization has its value, but it isn't worth that much. It manages to be much more accessible than modern shooters while not sacrificing any of the depth.
This game does something that bothers me, though. I can't stand how it slams on its brakes when entering bonus stages. The abrupt halt of the music and the HEY YOU'RE IN A BONUS STAGE NOW screen just aren't necessary. In a game that's otherwise all about seamless transitioning and cohesion, this really pulls you out of the experience, especially since it happens so often.
This review explains the scoring system.

...Alright, so there is a lot of memorization when it comes to maximizing scoring (namely weighing the column/row bonus with chaining for color/type for each wave), but it's certainly a lot less daunting than memorizing positioning and bullet patterns in DoDonPachi DOJ or something.
In any case, this game is the shit. I just cleared a stage while in Fever for the first time. 98K Bonus. Damn.
The other thing about the bonus stages is that they're all really easy. Most of them you don't have to really move your ship...
