SIE2 is amazing. It's far more complex.
Fever mode works differently: once you shoot the flashing UFO (after getting two sets of 4 identically coloured invaders - though you can get 2 sets of the same colour now and still trigger the UFO), you don't switch to a bonus round to activate fever. Instead, enemy patterns (which are just as varied and creative as SIE1's fever activation rounds) appear on the upper screen - without disrupting the invaders you're dealing with on the lower screen.
Once (if) you beat the upper screen invaders, then you go to a fever mode that's completely separate from the normal rounds. Ufo formations swoop in on the upper screen, and golden invaders fill the bottom screen. The golden invaders drop points items, and fever mode tallies up both your items grabbed and the UFOs shot down.
There's also a "bingo fever" mode. During normal play, the top screen has a 3x3 grid of boxes with two colours each in them. You fill boxes by shooting down 4 invaders each of the appropriate colours, just like you do to get the fever UFO. Once you fill a line on the grid, a bingo UFO appears. Shoot it down and you're treated to bingo fever, which is similar to normal fever but there's a pink UFO in each formation on the upper screen. It drops points items that are worth a lot.
That's all I've noticed so far. I'm sure there's far more that I haven't picked up on yet, but the total sensory overload of SIE2 (even moreso than the original) makes it difficult to pinpoint how certain mechanics work.
Oh yes, one more thing: paddle support is back and you can even upload scores if you used it - though a little icon beside your score will indicate that you used the paddle.
Holy shit this game is amazing. I am in love again, its been hard to put this down for more than maybe 10-15 minutes at a time today.
The new fever mode is very interesting, basically what bVork said, it doesn't stop the action anymore, but keeping track of both the top and bottom screen gets very hectic now.
2-Line bingo Fever modes are insanity, the points you rack up is just astounding.
Also, last boss is a bitch until you know where to be at what times, and thats only on 5a route, I'm almost afraid to see 5f or 5e.
He went down really easy on the first go. :/Also, last boss is a bitch until you know where to be at what times, and thats only on 5a route, I'm almost afraid to see 5f or 5e.
I really don't know what I think about this game (and the original, for that matter). It's a pretty shitty game to play for survival, that much is clear to me; it's pretty much nothing but a score attack shooting gallery, and I really like focusing on survival in my arcade-styled games first. But even from the scoring aspect, I'm not seeing a lot of intense things to play with in the first stage, and that's something one would have to sit through every single time they play the game.
I need more time with it, though I'm not sure when that'll happen.
Looks like the backgrounds were tamed down for Extreme 2, I guess the original's were kinda busy but not a fan of the new static art.
If I pretend I didn't enter this thread, I won't spend $ to buy the paddle, Arkanoid, and SIE 2. I'll see this thread in hell.
I really want a paddle now, I need a pink one to match Samba's DS. They still hard to come by?
