Is the Game Really Over For The Last Starfighter?

Back in the summer of 1984 I caught The Last Starfighter as a double matinee along with Conan the Destroyer. As a kid that grew up as a member of the golden age of videogaming I knew that Starfighter was special because it used computers to make the outer space battles. Two years before Starfighter I dug Tron and I was hoping for more of the same.
Well, at least Ghostbusters and Star Trek III saved that summer for me (although I now have a growing appreciation for Streets of Fire.)
But what’s this? Could there actually be a real sequel to The Last Starfighter coming out way? According to the cats at Cinema Blend, yup. They got tipped off that some outfit called George Paige and Associates is developing a sequel that will be released by Warner Bros. and Universal.
The source for Cinema Blend told them that the premise is your basic “Son of Starfighter” kind of idea, so it’s got to be the kid of Alex and Maggie (yes, kill me, I actually remember the characters’ names) all grown up and kicking more Kodan ass. Remember at the end of The Last Starfighter the human boy and girl went off into space to rebuild the Starfighter legion. Maybe there wasn’t any birth control up there and Alex Jr (or Maggie Jr.) is going to be a 20-something-year-old who’s never been to Earth. Maybe they can even work in an MMO angle into the storyline since videogame arcades are practically an extinct species of recreation.
Cinema Blend also reports that this thing is supposed to start filming next month and that director Nick Castle, writer Jonathan Betuel and star Lance Guest are all coming back to make it. If true, holy crap! I gotta confirm or deny this thing ASAP.
