Thread: Unemployment

  1. I only got what I paid into the employment insurance program, but I'm sure it's different elsewhere. My benefits ran out ages ago.

I've been unemployed since early november and I haven't really done much with all that free time. I did some minor renovations on my apartment over the winter, and some landscaping and gardening in the spring. I've also smoked a couple ounces of weed and learned to cook better food.

I was supposed to go back to work in may, but the job I was promised keeps getting pushed back because the ministry of the environment is dragging its heels on the environmental assessment for the project.

On the bright side, it looks like I'll be free for most of the summer, so I'll probably spend every nice day stoned and naked on the beach.

  3. It's crazy how some of you can be unemployed and still be able to afford your living expenses. I can't wait until I can have that kind of buffer in my savings.

  4. You should be pulling 10-15% of every check out as a buffer, you should start this week.

  5. I've been trying to do this, so far I have enough to survive for about a month without having a job. Ideally I believe you should have atleast 3 months saved.

  6. There was a time when I barely scraped by and had to pay rent with a credit card, and then pay that off a week or two later. I learned how to budget my money pretty damn quick at that point.
Unless you're making minimum wage or have serious student debt, it shouldn't be too hard to set aside something from every paycheck.
I know plenty of people that make a decent living, and yet they have fuck all for savings because they spend thousands of dollars on frivolous shit every year.

  7. I have roughly 5k saved up (Including what i"ll get from my PTO when it's cashed in when I leave my current job.)

And even that isn't enough to make me feel confident.

  8. 5k isn't alot with no job or unemployment.....

  9. That would support me comfortably for about four months.

  10. I'm still paying off the mistakes/purchases from my 20's, I should be mostly done by August (not including student loans) and then I can really start saving some money.
