Thread: Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device

  1. I will get one sooner or later. I like carrying a small device versus a big hardcover on my commute. Newspaper is a bonus (and no waste). The only real issue I see is not being able to lend ebooks to friends, but I realize I don't ever do that anyway (all the books I have lent out, I never see again and have to rebuy). You actually can lend out ebooks with the Nook, but it is a limited period of time and you lose access to it (which is no big deal).

I am just waiting for the price to come down to under $200. The Nook seems to be better because of Android and support PDF out of the box (versus Kindle's stupid email/conversion process which is hit or miss.

If your Kindle shits the bed and Amazon isn't supporting the device anymore, all that money you spent on ebooks over the years just... well, it's gone.
What's your thoughts on XBLA or PSN?

It seems like we're moving more towards a system where we don't truly "buy" these things anymore-- as in "this is mine, if I take care of it I can have it forever." We just have them in a sort of indefinite lease. And I don't like it.
Then get out of the way.

    CHOOO CHOOO!

  3. PS: Squall wants to go back to the horse and buggy. He also thinks that we didn't give the Pony Express enough time. If we had a few more decades it would have caught on. Damn them for inventing that stupid telegraph.

  4. To each his own. I love the idea of consolidating my entire collection of novels into one device. Saving space and improves accessibility (some of my books are in storage). Every ebook that replace one in my collection will be donated to the library.

Pretty much the same... Although I'll admit I've caved somewhat with XBLA and WiiWare/VC, it only makes up a small, small fraction of my game purchases. I like having a real, physical copy that I will always own, no matter what.

  6. Pony Express confirmed.

I want to retain ownership of the things that I pay money for. I do not want to borrow it until some corporation decides I shouldn't have it anymore. If that makes me a relic, oh fucking well.

I really think this fear is unfound. I doubt B&N or Amazon will disappear tomorrow or decide to screw everyone who bought these. It could happen, but the chance of that is about the same as your house getting burnt down.

Huh? I never said that I was against ebooks as a whole. I simply said that as the system currently stands, it's not as future-proof as the real thing. What part of that are you not getting?
