Wind Waker kicks the holy shit out of the N64 Zeldas. The gap isn't quite like Alone in the Dark to Resident Evil, however.
(The sailing sucks though)
Ocarina looked good to me but it wasn't because of the graphic detail. It was because of the atmosphere of places like the forest and Zora's domain. Mystical stuff.
I am the only insane person here who likes Tetrisphere.
It's worth keeping an N64 in the house because of that game.
And yeah, the N64 games were always horrendously ugly. I'll say F-Zero X looked pretty good. They kept that one simple and smooth. Yoshi's Story looked incredible, but that's all it did so that doesn't really count. Bit's of KI Gold looked alright-ish, but the Rare art department killed it in the end. 2D stuff like Bangaioh and the "Shake Shake. Shake Shake" game looked OK by default.
But man, everything else was a low-poly, muddy texture, blurry filter, popup-blocking fog-filled mess. I honestly don't think the system was capable of great graphics. It took a Hurculean effort to make "OK" graphics.
