Thread: Ziff Davis Files for Chapter 11

  1. I kinda still like EGM. GamePro, on the other hand...

  2. GamePro is a good magazine to read up until the age you realize the ProTips are really obvious and stupid.

I suspect at least a few TNL members are staunch subscribers to this day.

It might have become magically good again, but I wouldn't know. I gave up in the mid-to-late 90s.

  4. I mean, hell, I loved Nintendo Power right up to the point they started pimping the N64 like mad. (GameFan also had this problem --but then again, GF would pimp any "new" thing, throwing caution to the wind. They gave a cover to the goddamn Virtual Boy, for cripes sake.)

The comics and maps in NP were great.

This doesn't address the quality issues.

The Meach has a point in that printed media covering gaming will never have the following politics or something more widespread will. But still... there are quality writers everywhere. If I ran a magazine I'd have NeoZ on staff for nothing but fact and analytics -- making sure people aren't saying wrong things to jeopardize the integrity of the magazine (which EGM and every other one do). You'd also have to publish less-than-stellar preview of games coming out that are supposed to be the next big thing. You don't have to slaughter them but act professional.

If a publisher refuses to hand you a preview mention it, and bury them based on the lack of confidence they have behind their product. Also make reviews 4 stars and force people to read a page or so on it to see how the score is justified.

  6. I miss small city phone book-sized EGM from the '90s. Never quite the same once they streamlined.

  7. I remember the Mortal Kombat issue being the most sought after book in the history of my life when I was 9 or 10.

  8. I still have those EGM's.
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

  9. I'd do anything for the complete Next Generation library.

  10. I have a few. I'll have to look to see how many.
