Thread: Baroque

  1. Seems a lot like the Saturn version. As far as I could see, the game had one level that was impossible to finish. So many items backfired when activated. I put it down to the language and the use of Kanji instead of icons, but after translating a lot of it, I did no better than when I was guessing.

The atmosphere was extraordinary though, but it depends a lot on the music. They seem to have changed that for the remake.

  2. So I played this for a little bit, and I didn't realize beforehand that it was a first person action-RPG roguelike.

That's, like, the coolest sounding thing ever, to me. It definitely has sloppy controls, though, regardless of the camera (third person has some sloppy animation, and first person has attack buttons as face buttons that can't be changed to shoulder buttons), and I'd really like to hear the original music over this industrialbutt.

Are there any other games like this? Hell, even just real-time roguelikes?

  3. Aren't roguelikes inherently turn-based? Isn't that what makes them Like Rogue? "Real-time roguelike" doesn't make sense to me.

  4. I always thought of roguelikes as being RPGs with enemies that move while you move (obviously happens by default in real-time), totally random dungeons, and permadeath.

Depends how rogue-like you want it? "Rogue Hearts Dungeon" is basically Rogue with updates graphics:

If you like the genre, I would recommend the following dungeon crawlers for ps2:
    King's Field IV
Wizardry: Tales of the forsaken land.
    Champions of Norrath
    Champions: Return to arms

These ps2 dungeon crawlers are also rumoured to be decent:
The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon
    Shining Force Neo
    Shining Force Exa

Otherwise check one of the dungeon crawler threads on this forum.

  6. I've been playing this too. It becomes a bit tedious, but is still addictive.

You can actually do battle with the higher enemies in this version, which is nice. Combat is limited though. You just thrash the enemies with your sword, and maybe use a torture device (basically a bomb) when the game gives you one.

It's not nearly as menacing as the original on account of the music, lower difficulty and voice acting.

I couldn't use the third person view. The control set-up is ridiculous - Moving with the left stick and looking with the right means you can't look and attack at the same time. Strafing with the direction buttons is useless because you move so slowly like this. The lock-on feature is pointless too. It only locks on when the enemy is close and unlocks too easily.

The dungeon exploration aspect of Dark Cloud 2 best fits that description.

  8. My friend picked this up on a whim. He's having a hellva time trying to figure it out. But then again his big screen tv is going bad and he can hardly see, so that makes things worse. So far his main problem with the game is not really knowing wtf is going on or what to do sometimes.

I may try and give it a go if he don't trade it in out of disgust and see how I like it. But at the moment I'm a busy man and don't really have time for a dungeon crawler. I may look up some more info online to see if it'll clear up some prolems he's having with the game and make it more fun.

  9. June 27th in PAL-land.

Not the stupid, even further tedious, weapon creation system, though, right?
    Please be right.
