Thread: Tarsem Singh's The Fall

  1. #11
Saw it in one of the most comfortable theaters i ever been in.
    The Landmark on Pico.
Very small theater, with leather love seats instead of chairs.
The little girl made this movie. She was lovable from the start.
The visuals were very nice. The color wasn't something on the level of Hero but the set pieces were great. The sense of place and discovery was genuine. And the flow of the story was interesting, when a scene would happen at one spot, cut to the real world, and when the story returned it was in a entirely different place with the narrative continuing where it left off.
The over arching story of the whole thing is your basic story of redemption. Its the stuff that is layered on top of that basic story that will draw you in.
I also loved how the little girl tended to influence the story. One character going from a British accent, to American, to French in the span of 5 min.
Or 2 characters having this intense dialog, and one character starts sneezing, because the little girl sneezed, cut back and the character is now doing the pee pee dance because the little has to pee.
    I loved it.

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

  3. So, the DVD came out a few weeks ago.

Apparently, there was no CG used in the film.

    Interview Ebert had with Tarsem:

    Interview!

    Bit about the Blue City
And as for the Blue City...

"Jodhpur, the blue city, is a Brahmin city where you’re only supposed to paint your house blue. I made a contract with the city; we would give them free paint. We knew legally they could only choose blue. So they painted their houses blue and it looked more vibrant than it ever had before."
It also explains about the Escher-esque stairs (which is actually a reservoir).
"I see the world didn't end yesterday."

    "Are you sure?"

  4. I posted in the last watched thread but I will say this again, this movie is amazing. If you have blue ray do yourself a favor and get the brd version. That is cool about the blue city, I thought it was a CG city. This movie is even cooler now that I know everything is real.

Yeah, I really want to see the BRD version.

I wanted to watch the movie earlier, but being without power for over a week kind of squelched that idea. Was worth it though.

  6. The cinematography and visuals in this movie were absolutely stunning, probably the best ive ever seen. Many of the set locations make you dream of how amazing this world is ,and that such places could exist (*even if not so amazing in real life, see ebert interview)

The cast of Bandits was refreshingly unique, and I would have loved to see an entire film of only their adventures. The real time story was perfect and played along well in-and-out of the epic. The atmosphere was very Wizard of Oz-like with the usage of characters and actions existing in both worlds. The end of the story was the most emotionally charged part in that it was very draining (in a good way). killing off the characters esp. the mystic, i think was the best part of the film. tying this into roy's desperation and the girls hope was a tug of war on your heart strings

However, I am still unstatisfied with the movie overall. The epic story left me wanting more, i wish it was more in depth and possibly more action. An added 10-20 minutes of Bandit adventures could have done wonders.

My biggest complaint eluded me for several days, i've tried to put my finger on what exactly could have made this a classic, and I think I finally found the thorn in my side...

The little girl was perfect, her actions and dialogue were very believable. Roy, the stuntman was dashing and played his injured and bandit roles as good as could be expected.

However using his voice for narration failed to bring the epic fable to a level that could have made this movie superb. I dont know if it is due to his inflection or softspokenness, or even partly the bad dialogue, but aside from the ending of the story, the narrative truly missed the mark. IMHO A stronger voiced actor could really have made a difference in breathing emotion, timing and cadence into the fairytale

It is definitely worth a watch for the visuals alone. Because of the remarkable eye candy, any film lover should give this a shot. Especially if you can catch it on Blu Ray, you will be blown away.
