Thread: Dead Space

  1. This, Fable 2, and Fallout 3 are now my must gets for the year.

  2. nearly shit my pants last night. i was at a shop in a "cleared" area, and even while buying plasma rounds you could hear them in the walls. i musta been browsing too long because as soon as i exited the shop menu, the mother fucker jumped out right on top of me. seriously the most unexpected time

  3. Just wanted to say that I think this game is amazing too. I got to Chapter 6 last night, and I am totally addicted to this game. The storyline isn't the greatest, but the situations the game puts the character in makes me want to keep playing to see what happens next. I definitely get the Metroid vibe too, due to the isolation of the main character.

I'm not sure if its already been mentioned in this thread, but what developer put this gem of a game together for EA? First, I saw the EA logo on the case and thought this would be crap...has the developer made any previous games?

  4. yeah, it's EA. Redwood Shores

  5. It's a brand-new, in-house development studio. Not sure if they've done anything else.

They've mostly worked on 007 games, and some of them have worked on other licensed stuff like the Godfather. This was their first original, which they were really glad to get a shot at.

This is not correct at all. I spoke to a few of the developers at E3 and they were all Bond vets.

Thats interesting. Some of the latest 007 games have actually been pretty decent. I really enjoyed the "From Russia With Love" game that came out a few years ago. If "Dead Space" is the same development team that made "From Russia With Love" then they definitely showed some promise with that licensed title.

"Dead Space" is a really great start to, hopefully, a new franchise. I wouldn't necessarily say its a very scary game, but the atmosphere just sucks you in and wont let go. There aren't too many games out there that have that effect...and it entirely makes up for the game not being terribly scary. That being said...I do have to admit that I get a little freaked out whenever the game locks you into a room with very little space to run, very little ammo, and a ton of enemies swarming around you. Those are some "oh shit" moments

I really hope not. I loved the game, but like Bioshock, we don't need another Dead Space. The game was great, ended fine. The story wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible, and it doesn't need any more. Take the ideas, mechanics, etc. and put them towards something new. Much like they should have done then make a sequel to Bioshock. Though if they can pull it off in both franchises, then I will continue to play them.

Yeah, I'm really not sure how the story ends yet because I'm only towards the end of Chapter 6 right now. For all I know, the ending may make it rather difficult to make a direct sequel.

If they can make a direct sequel though, I wouldn't see anything that terribly wrong with it. There aren't that many new IPs these last two generations that have gone on to become a successful series. It would be nice to revisit the worlds of "Dead Space" and "Bioshock" (even though, oddly enough, I didn't like Bioshock) before I have to see another 5 World War II shooters on the market.

If they can actually pull it off, then I am all for it. I think the fear is of developers either being too lazy to add anything new or just relying to much on the success of the original. Part of what makes these new IP's so great is exploring it all for the first time. I'd rather them take a little more time to come up with some new ideas rather than just going to sequel after sequel, but I guess in this day and age, they have to do what is easiest to make money.
