Revenge is more of a gaiden thing designed for the console, set in a totally different time period. Shadow Dancer is more like the first game. It'san arcade port, and that shows, but it's definately good if you liked the first game.
I was going through our Genesis section and found this in there for pretty cheap. How does it stack up against Revenge of Shinobi? I dig Revenge, and was considering getting this. Um, yeah.

Ever play the original Shinobi? Shadow Dancer plays much more like it than like Revenge. As in, one hit will kill you, and the objective is to rescue all the hostages.
Eh, I may be the only one, but I enjoy it.
The Genesis Shadow Dancer is similar to the arcade game but it's actually a completely different game. I think it's better than the arcade one. The arcade version was ported to the import Master System.
Even though I really like Shadow Dancer, Revenge of Shinobi is far better in every way.
Shadow Dancer is one of my favorites, maybe that's just because it had a wolf in it though![]()
I love SD. The megadrive version is different and I didn't like it that much as the arcade version.
Yes it's a shinobi rip-off, but I don't mind. The dog's cool though.
Master system version I had many years ago, but it wasn't that good either.
Go ninja!
I basically consider there to be two Shinobi series.
1. Shinobi, Shadow Dancer.
2. Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, Shinobi Legions.
It's my favorite Shinobi game. Though I haven't played Return in about eight years and I do recall it being really, really, really fantastic.
I'm not sure about Shin Shinobi Den, but Revenge and Shinobi III were both part of the Super Shinobi series in Japan. And then there's the Game Gear Shinobis.Originally posted by NeoZeedeater

Well, it's just my personal categorization more than anything.
Legions plays just like Super Shinobi 1 and 2. The Game Gear ones are also in this style except for the multiple, different colored ninjas.
And The Cyber Shinobi, which I purposely left out, would fall into category one if I chose to include it.
And on another note, I have both the Genesis and Mega Drive versions of Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3. The box art on the imports is fantastic whereas the domestics...
