Right, Borat was disarming. He was a supposed foreign dude in a strange land, so some things were accepted. Bruno is just an obnoxious homosexual running around trying to make people feel uneasy.
The way he baited people into acting like fools involved some subtlety, and that is what's missing from this. It's not that the movie itself was subtle. The people he was talking too were the butt of the joke, whereas here it's just the character.Originally Posted by Josh

The Bruno character as he played it on the show was disarming too. He was hosting Funkyzeit and people would buy into that this was a real show and they wanted to come off good on television, and that was disarming too. I wish he played it like that.
Right, that's what I mean. I liked seeing him on Funkyzeit and he'd ask a model something absurd like, do you feel like this is a hard, rough look? They'd answer. Well what makes you feel like this is a soft comforting look? They'd answer contradictory to what they had just said.

I also find it odd/amusing that people get so bothered over penis in this movie. The dominatrix's poon was in full view during the swingers scene and no one batted an eyelash. Then again it didnt scream BRUNO to me, so there is that at least. I laughed my ass off except for when I was thinking how awefull it must be to be tricked into thinking you are going to a legit interview and then either sitting on a mexican and talk about charity or having Bruno ass shaken at you in a closed room. Ew.

I get the impression that he tried to play the character the way he did on the show, but wasn't getting funny useable material, so he went over the top. In the beginning of the movie it looks like he's doing it right, talking to the model about how hard it is being a model and calling autism trendy, but then the movie devolves into endless gay sex jokes.
