Thread: System-wise, How Is Your Game Playing Time Divided?

    *AHEM*

    1998
    80% - PS1
10% - Dreamcast (I was playing the import system of a friend's a few months)
    10% - N64

Oh, for conversation's sake - I think it's remarkable that I've seen such changes in gaming in just 20+ years. Not only have graphics gotten better but formats have changed, industry giants have died, revived, and lost prominence, and the tastes of gamers and developers have shifted a lot. It's pretty amazing to really grasp that we've gone through so many genres, styles, gameplay mechanics, controllers, systems, rivalries and gaming is still strong and thriving. What other nerd hobby do you know of that can attest to that?

  2. so far for 2008:
    50% PS2 (70% JPN, 30% US)
    20% Saturn
    10% DuoR
    5% GameCube
    5% Dreamcast
    5% SNES
    5% misc

    1998
    80% Saturn
    15% N64
    5% Genesis/SegaCD

    1988
    80% NES
    20% Atari 5200

    1978
    100% generic Squash/Paddle console

Do this again in 2010, and you'll get an entirely different range of stats. 1990 was a huge year with NES, SMS, Genesis and TurboGraphx getting lots of play equally, and 1980 was pretty much when I started playing hardcore.

edit: whoops, I didn't include handhelds, or arcade. My numbers are completely skewed. Damn I forgot Apple II also ~ played Karateka, and Summer Games almost more than anything on my 5200.

I'm not going to make up bullshit numbers but my play time between the 360 and older PC games is about split, followed by all my other systems being about equal, including wii time, and then handhelds in dead last because I really don't give a shit anymore about playing on tiny cramped screens most of the time.

I've been on one boring vacation where I played Fire Emblem on the GBA, and that's about the only time I've really played a handheld the way it was meant to be played. Most of the other GBA games I played on my Gamecube from my couch, and since I can't do that with the DS I don't really play it, even though I do want to play the newer Advance Wars and Contra 4 eventually.

In the past my PC game time has spiked due to love affairs with games like Counterstrike, WoW, Morrowind, the MYST series, X-Com, etc...and when I got my new computer in 2002 I played a lot of games I had missed out on, like Deus Ex, but other than real obsessions it's always been pretty evenly split among all my systems.

I think the point was supposed to be how NeoZeed briefly discussed his choices for each time frame, but as usual most people just posted a list which isn't very interesting.

TNL loves the shit out of boring context-free lists!

    30% PC
    15% 360
    7% PS2
    5% NES
    3% PS3/Wii/Xbox

I play a ton of DS/GBA games while I'm watching movies/TV/baseball so that gets a lot of time, especially during baseball season. I still put a lot of time into Civ 4 so there's no way anything but handhelds take more of my free time than the PC. Every now and then a 360 game will hit that I put some serious time into. I've played more of my PS2 backlog since getting my PS3. The NES hooked up in my bedroom gets a lot of random playtime. And I think I've played one game each all year on the PS3, Wii & Xbox.

    1998

    35% PS1
    30% PC
    15% Saturn/arcade
    10% Gameboy Pocket
    10% N64/SNES/NES

From what I can remember I played a lot of PS1 games around this time period because it was right around when I got my first mod chip and my first CD burner. Civ 2 & X-COM/TFTD took up almost all of my PC time back then and I put a lot of my free time into those. I know I still had a Saturn and I'm sure I put a good amount of time into SFA2 & X-men vs. SF on that plus I spent a decent chunk of time at a local arcade that had Street Fighter 3 on quarter play. I've never been without a gameboy so I know I was playing my Pocket back then. And the rest of my time was spent with some from of Tecmo Bowl on NES & SNES and playing Goldeneye & WCW/NWO Revenge on my friend's N64.

    1988

    90% NES
    5% 2600/7800
    5% Arcade

I was 7 and just had an NES at home. The 7800 with a ton of games was over at my Grandparent's house so I'm sure I played that whenever I was over there. And I'd jump on an arcade machine whenever I had the chance.

    5% PS2
    2% PC
    2% Vectrex
    1% 2600

I have not found a reason to turn on the PS3 or Wii this year. Eventually I should play the Pinball Hall of Fame collecting dust on the shelf but there's nothing to play on the PS3.

    1998
    20% Saturn
    20% 2600
    10% PC
    10% 5200
    10% Colecovision
    7% PS1
    5% 7800
    5% Intellivision
    5% Genesis
    3% Vectrex
2% dedicated consoles (Pong, Video Pinball, etc.)
    1% O2
    1% SNES
    1% NES

I don't think I imported a Dreamcast until early 1999, so it just misses. I think it was also 1999 when EB had loads of good Saturn imports under $10, so it really picked up then. Might be a little high on the PS1... there was so little worth playing on that system at that time, but what I did play I played in long stints.

    1988
    48% 7800
    45% 2600
    5% Colecovision
    2% NES

Colecovision and NES were at friends and relatives. The NES was unappealing then and that has never changed.

    1978
Turned 3 that year so I think it was another year until I played Pong for the first time. Might have randomly pressed buttons on a Mattel Football or something like that.
