"The ambition with Universe is to skew it younger than the previous two chapters and fill it with a fresh-faced cast; and a storytelling that is more for the late 2000s than it is for the 1990s."

Howe also wants Stargate Universe to help fill the "space opera" gap left when network jewel Battlestar Galactica goes off the air next spring. While of course Stargate will never be the dark and brooding character drama that Battlestar is, Universe might be a little more so than SG-1 or Atlantis.

"As a network, obviously we look at Battlestar Galactica, that's set the standard in terms of tense character drama. Stargate does not have the intensity of a Battlestar Galactica. But it may well be somewhere in between. Brad [Wright] and Robert [Cooper] are very eager to keep the action and adventure and the sense of humor [in Stargate Universe]. But I think there's an opportunity to maybe inject a bit more dramatic intensity into the series. But that's obviously a conversation for them as they start to script and move into development."
summary: "bsg is that hotness so we're going to ape it with the stargate franchise" and it won't fucking work you dumb knobs as they're TWO DISTINCT STYLES OF SCIFI

edit: fyi they said stargate atlantis was supposed to be darker too... yeah, that never quite happened

  2. I actually think a more intense Stargate would be a good thing. One of my complaints about Atlantis is that they WEREN'T intense enough with the scripts. Nothing seemed like that much of a threat, and they really didn't build major story lines up that well. It seemed like the Replicators v.2 were born, then developed. And then sometime at the end of season 4 all of a sudden attacked and now the city is flying through space!

Having vicious, blood thirsty Wraith around all of the place killing human fuckers would have been was more visceral and intense. So that is a good idea. I don't think that necessary skews the franchise younger like they seem to think it does, though.

  3. a more intense stargate will never happen, especially on scifi and with their current writers

  4. I got to season 8 of SG1, and tried to watch the pilot of Atlantis but I fucking hated it. Maybe I should give the whole thing another shot, since I seem to love getting into shows only after they're canceled (Firefly, Dead Like Me, etc)

  5. I just got done watching Atlantis seasons 1-4 on DVD and I've never watched SG-1. I felt the character interactions, particularly in the first three seasons, were excellent. The 4th season was definitely the weakest and, without even having seen the replicators in SG-1, the demise of the wraith as the primary adversary really hurt the show. And, I hate fucking clones/doubles/alternate timeline versions of the same person, time warps to change history, and all that shit that Star Trek already beat the shit out of decades ago. That should never, ever, be a theme in a Sci Fi show ever again. The "cliffhanger" ending to season 4 was so awful that I don't know if even want to wait for 5 to be released on DVD to see what happens.

  6. SG1's replicators > Atlantis' replicators by a mile, Haoh

also, you should watch seasons 1-8 of SG1 (9 and 10 are kinda ehh, especially after half the cast of farscape joined)

  7. SG-1's replicators had some of the coolest starship design since the The Next Generation's Borg reveal. Seriously, even the raw material Replicator ships look mechanical and menacing. Very awesome.
