Thread: Religulous

  1. I don't think he's actually atheist, he's just against all organized religion.

  2. The movie is supposed to be more comedic than persuasive, I don't expect it to be preachy at all.

I pretty much 100% agree with Bill Maher about religion, though I am not as vocal about my opinions on it as he is. That youtube clip does a good job of pointing out his dislike for organized religion as well as how far way too many people are taking it these days.

I had dinner with the folks and a friend of theirs the other night, and we were talking about this movie. By the way, they are pretty hardcore jesus freaks. They wanted to know why I didn't like religion and believe in God, etc. Even though we all said we respected one anothers opions, they still kept trying to convince me of this and that. Fuck that. Religious people need to settle the fuck down and realize that non-religious people hate them because they constantly try to push their beliefs on others yet say that's not what they are doing. I know not all religious people are like that, but a mjaority of the ones I know are.

  4. Religious people are fine as long as they are never put in positions of power and influence.

To clear it up, Bill Maher is anti Religion as an organized tangible thing and not anti belief in God. His repeated stance on it is simply, "How can any of these people be so certain they are right?" "How come they don't ask themselves basic questions about how absurd and controlling these organizations are?"...etc.

I feel the same way. If I don't know that anything exists I am open to the idea of it. But if I know something is ridiculous (i.e. Creationism, man walking with dinosaurs) why do I have to be the one who respects someone elses half-retarded belief in the untruth, while they can go about merrily claiming ignorance about it at all? Its quite unfair and its why people who are anti-religious are also generally anti-manners.

El Capitan you're a better man than me, I would have flipped my dish over, yelled out "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS", and left the situation entirely.

I can't wait till Friday. Only 1 theater in the area showing this. Gonna go get some sushi for dinner, stop by the local atheist club meeting (I'm kidding) and then hopefully enjoy the shit out of watching uber evangelical religious people make fools of themselves. But seriously, I hope Bill does a good job of showing how absurd some of these people are and not how big of a jackass he can be.

Seriously. A movie about some dude being an ass to religious people would not be that funny. Let them make fools of themselves.

  8. I sort of want to see this, but I keep thinking in the back of my mind that the guy is a PETA idiot and anti-vaccinationist. I liked Borat so I may see anyway.

If you've seen or heard Bill Maher talk on he subject before then you prety much know what he is going to be like in this movie. Also, if you are interested in the movie, try to find the clip of Bill on the Daily Show from the other day. It's good stuff.

  10. Just got back from this. I may be a bit biased, seeing as I agreed with Bill 100% on the subject before seeing the movie, but I thought it was done pretty well. First off, Bill is never saying he doesn't believe in god, or any kind of god, or that there is no god. What he is saying is, or rather asking, how can people be so sure about what they believe in, and frankly, what are pretty much fairy tales from thousands of years ago. What's wrong with saying I don't know? Anyways, a good watch. Can't wait to watch Real Time in about 20 min.
