    yes i know

  2. I'm all for it. I can't honestly imagine what the movie would be like with these people involved. How bizarre would it be if they do a faithful recreation?

Why do people treat film remakes like Book Adaptations? Id say its more comparable to Cover Songs, its not intended to be a scene by scene recreation.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  3. I'll pay to see this movie Day One if Will Smith will eat a live squid.

  4. First Bangkok Dangerous, now this. What's next, remakes of Ichi the Killer, Raise the Red Lantern, and Hard Boiled? I wouldn't be surprised, at this rate.

No one complained about The Departed because Scorsese knows what he's doing. No one got upset when Cronenberg redid The Fly (best remake ever) for the same reasons. Same deal when Rob Zombie redid Halloween, although I sure bitched plenty. All of these brought something new to the original idea; something that augmented or improved, or examined content from a different perspective.

Most of these recent remakes aren't treated with the same care and respect. It's not just that remakes are being done, it's the people involved and the unfaithful changes that are typically made. The film is changed to make the film suitable for the modern US market (read "crippled"), not because the director has a new vision.

I'd advocate that the original filmmakers need to give their approval for a remake, but I know how complex the rights process can be, so n/m.

Then you've got the whole Quarantine/REC thing, when many people aren't even aware of the previous version. I think when a remake comes out, it should be made very clear that it's not original. I think it's unfair and misleading when this isn't mentioned, and moreso when the original is recent, for some reason.

Will this remake of Oldboy be accompanied by "based on the Korean cult phenomenon" taglines? Probably not....but it should be.

edit: plaid, can you imagine the uproar? SAVE THE SQUIDS and what not. That scene won't happen because the US market is so intolerant and wishy-washy, and that's one major reason why remakes of films like this are thin shadows of the originals.

Yes, I can hear the uproar already if they include that scene.

Also, how is Spielberg, with his family friendly values, going to handle the "big reveal" at the end of this movie. I don't see how they're going to remake this movie without crippling it.

  6. I didn't complain when Rob Zombie announced he was remaking Halloween, I sure did when it came out though. Talk about one of the worst ever. Hardly an interpretation, felt more like Rob thought he could make a better movie. Which obviously he failed at miserably.

I passed on Rob Zombie's "Halloween" remake, because my brother made me sit through "The Devil's Rejects" and it was one of the most atrocious and obnoxious films that I've ever seen. Its not that I was turned off by the violence and language, but something about the film just annoyed the shit out of me. Is it safe to say that "Halloween" is just as bad as "The Devil's Rejects"?

  8. I liked The Devils Rejects, MxPx. Because it was basically a cartoon, not intended to be compared to real life etc. So the characters could be so over the top I could excuse it. Halloween tried to make it seem like it was taking place in our real world, a profile on madness or whatever. So Rob Zombie drags us through all this shitty psycho analysis and spends like half the movie in a mental hospital, with one of the worst Child Actors ever. Then when it moves back to horror movie mode, he decides "Wouldn't it be neat if Michael Myers was more like the Hulk!" So he throws the subtle fear in the dirt. So awful.

Thats an interesting analysis of "The Devils Rejects." Maybe I'll check it out again sometime and see if it plays better if I watch it from that mind set.

I guess I'll continue to skip the remake of "Halloween" then. The original is one of my favorites, and its another one of those movies that doesn't have much room for improvement.

  10. Yeah, avoid the remake. Even if it wasn't a remake, its his worst film and retread of the standard horror films that have been made it last 8 years.
