I'd also say skip Zombie's Halloween if you're a fan of the original. Clash is right; the subtle menace and mystery is almost completely absent.

I respected Zombie's attempt, and I think he has tremendous respect for the original. However, I thought his remake was far, far inferior to Carpenter's classic in just about every way possible. Zombie (along with most modern horror directors) doesn't seem to grasp that the most effective horror is about what you don't see just as much as what you do see.
