Saw this last Sunday and loved it. No complaints, not even about the high pitch collar joke since it was needed to tie up the end.

When she started making mocking "cutsey dog" and "cutsey bird" dickfingers, I reminded her who the fuck's floor she's borrowing.
Madness! Nevermind fightin' words!

My reaction was about the same as your houseguest. I don't dislike Pixar films but I think at this point they're mostly just something where I can admire the art and watch with nieces and nephews when I need to.
I won't make fun of the wacky dogs since they probably need to have things like that in their films and it's more of a matter of how well they can pull it off but this was probably the first of their movies that made me think about what they could do with a smaller budget and more creative freedom. Of course, the limits on what they can do might be entirely imagined meaning they'd just end up making a regular Pixar film with lower production values, I dunno.
I don't really know what you're expecting from 3D movies, but superfluous depth of field is all they need.I've never seen a 3D movie where the 3D aspect wasn't anymore than a gimmick. The 3D in Up didn't add anything to the movie but some superfluous depth of field.
