Thread: Dreamcast Light Guns

  1. Dreamcast Light Guns

I never picked up HotD2 because I am always weary of 3rd party products. But I really wanna play through this game without spending a fortune at the arcades. I read reviews on IGN's site that recommended the Mad Catz light gun (forgot the name) over the Interact Starfire gun, though marginally.

So, I'm gonna try to score 2 controllers and HotD2 (possibly off Ebay), for those of you who own a DC light gun, got any recommendations? Please give info on comfort, accuracy, rarity of the light gun, and price you would expect me to pay. If it starts getting too expensive I might bite the bullet and get this questionable light gun/HotD2 package.

    Thanks for your help guys.

  2. All I have are 2 japanese Sega guns. They work perfect for me, just one little problem. They won't frekin work with domestic games! I still haven't been able to play Death Crimson OX (in english at least) or Confidential Mission. I still have my japanese copys of HotD and Virtua Cop 2 and they both still get a crazy amount of play time.

    Guess I'm not much help,

  3. I use the Starfire lightgun with House of the Dead 2. While not quite as accurate as the stunner gun, that was available for the Saturn, I found it quite reliable. The only issue I had with it, was that some shots missed near the edge of the screen. My problem, has probably more to do with the angle of the television, not being perfectly centered in front of me.

The official DC magazine calls the Starfire Lightblaster the best choice. The one they picture in the magazine looks like an older model, to the one I have though.

I looked at the combo you posted, and I can say that I've never seen these light guns before. I'm thinking that they may be Japanese, as they were never release in the US.

You can pick up a Starfire Lightblaster at Gamestop, Electronic's Boutique, or any where else that sells used games. I've seen them selling for around $14, and I saw one package for $20, with another gun, that came with Death Crimson.

If your going to buy the one offered in your link, I suggest you check out the sellers, buyer feedback to see if this person is legit.

Unless you want to import some gun, your only choice is the interact and the madcatz one. This is the only time ive ever botten 3rd party stuff so heres what i think. initially I went with the interact one because it was cheaper, wrong choice! It sucked sooo hard! It broke in like 3 weeks and was a cheap POS. Then i was weary, but I really wanted to play some light gun games some more so I got teh madcatz one. Problem solved! Its got everything I need right there! It works find on any game so I don't really see any reason to import a gun, just get the "DreamBlaster"

  5. I had the interact gun, dam thing crappy out on me a few months ago.

  6. This kind of thread seems to pop up about every 6 weeks or so. No harm though, since one can't always keep up with the blistering pace of the TNL board. On with the reply:

If you're playing domestic, I would recommend tracking down the MadCatz guns. I have 2 of them (aside from the SoJ import gun) and they work like a charm; comfortable, accurate, and with the typical features of aftermarket light guns (auto fire, etc.). I've used them over and over and have never had any problem with them, and IMO, they crush the Pelican/Interact guns. Go find 'em -- they're cheap.

Oh yeah, in case you haven't figured it out yet, BUY 2 GUNS. Anyone who sees the game will want to play co-op with you. Also, if you have no friends, you can go two-fisted-John-Woo-screaming-angel-of death on those nasty zombies. A big, big rush.

Yep, I believe I started the least one actually. lol

Anyways, track down the Madcatz guns. The pair I have seem to be working great, and have lasted thru many a HotDII session with me and my g/f.

They don't seem as accurate as they should be, for example the crosshairs don't line up exactly when you callibrate them, but in-game they seem to work fine.

I had a horrible time finding them (all gamestop/eb had were the interact guns), but it seems like within the last couple of weeks a few of the local Gamestop/Babbagse/Funcos got the Madcatz guns back in stock.

So hopefully it's the same by you, and some of your gamestores have 'em also.

  8. Thanks for the help... I actually didn't know that the Japanese Sega gun doesn't work on the domestic copy of HotD2... surprise surprise...

Mad Catz it is... if I can't find it I'll just settle for the Interact one since Gamestop's got a whole bunch of them...

Actually it won't work with any US lightgun game. Don't be too dissapointed, they're not even that good and the accuracy is still a bit off anyway. At least it'll last you longer than the Interact gun(That sucker lasted my friend about 2 weeks or so).

  10. I thought it was an unwritten rule that all accessories must work on US and Japanese versions.

Did Sega intentionally make their gun incompatible with US games?
