Suppose so? I think it could definately apply to "VR", but goes a little further as far as perception of self is concerned. Hell, I could see a lot of therapy applications emerging using this kind of stuff.
Think in terms of developing a way of helping a patient accept a prosthetic limb, for instance.
VR/Entertainment applications (i.e.: "shit") are like the bottom rung of practical uses that could come out of this, potentially.

I don't know, based on the details of the article I don't think it works like that. I think it's more about how the conjuction of different sensory input can heighten the authenticity of an illusion.
I think the real question to pose here is such:
If presented with the chance, would you make out with yourself?
I totally would. I draw my face on my hand and practice at least 3 days each week.
