How can the 3D detract?
Some of you guys should probably invest in pirate eye patches for future movies.
If the two projectors aren't perfectly aligned, it can lead to a softer image for sure. I've noticed this a lot of times, where details and textures are much sharper, easier to notice and see in the 2d version of the film than the 3d one. Talking to my friends who do Stereoscopic compositing for film, they blame it on poor projector set up.
