It looks like there's specific symbols on it, too. Maybe there's some 'Eye of Judgement' style shenanigans going on here, different symbol combinations generating different armor segments on the fly?

That would be pretty fucking awesome. I've had to do some camera tracking stuff where they just used pink X's made of tape, and they were completely fucking worthless half the time.
