This show is about Don and Peggy. One on the way up and one on the way down. That's what I take from it anyway.
I don't think the show is "about nothing." It's about the identity of its characters and the identity of the country/culture, how those identities are manufactured, maintained, and ultimately exposed as fraudulent (with no lasting consequences, really). It's about far more than the typical television drama.

and Nick - I don't actually mean to demean the plot by comparing it to Seinfeld. In fact, to the contrary - I hold it to its gold standard of storytelling perfection. It's hard for me to convey because it's late and I just watched Breaking Bad AND Dexter and my brain is TV fried, but I think you actually perfectly summed up both the plot of Mad Men AND Seinfeld. Essentially it's what I love about both - it's about "types" of people (the go getter! the asshole! the busty girl!) in a very specific point in time and how their actions and reactions propel them deeper into their qualities, for better or worse. And hey, the ending of Seinfeld was basically a group of assholes sitting alone in a jail cell, a prisoners of their own narcissism. I don't think the ending of MM will be too far off for some characters.
My wife loves films and series where "Nothing happens", just day to day life that might be interesting. So she eats up stuff like Freaks and Geeks, and My So Called Life.
I just woke up this morning and realized I'm finally over Jordan Catalano.
