  2. Mad Men

I watched the first 3 episodes, really enjoyed them. I didn't like last years season-long pity party. I like the ambitious Don. Something tells me he will screw it up, but that's why he is a good character. I really enjoyed the scenes with Sally.

I read a book on Goldman Sachs that discussed the partnership structure. It's not really around anymore. Partners would have 80% or 90% of their wealth tied up in the firm. It really is a sink or swim thing. You're on the hook for everything that goes wrong, directly, as in you'll be living in a cardboard box if it falls apart. So, Don basically offered up his partnership to get his shit together.

Part of me thinks that because of the cold/warm thing they have going on. Everyone in California in the warmth is doing very well while people in the east are cold and still plodding through shit.
That was the attitude back then. CA was the place to be, new, fresh, growing, while the east was cold and decaying. Beach Boys, surfer culture in the 1950s, hippies in the 1960s, highways and new construction and new cars. It isn't the first time the show touched on that.

Everyone says that about every episode in every season. Except 4—fuck that shit.

It was a recurring theme for Dick/Don. Now with Dick out of the closet everyone has crossed over. It's a great theme.

  5. Kubrick references abound!!!!!!!!
First of all, the show was called "the Monolith"....the speech Lloyd made about the computers was a perfect plot summary of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not to mention, the guy's name was Lloyd (bartender in The Shining.) The lady was being "chased" down the hall by that kid who looked like the kid from the Shining. Don and the typewriter at the end was also very Shining-eque.

I know I am reading way too much into this show at this point, but goddamn I feel like I'm watching a horror movie every Sunday. The level of disturbing just keeps going deeper and deeper. The addition of the Kubrick references just made it about 100 times worse. I swear, they may as well just put Pyramid Head in the halls of SDCP and be done with it.

  6. What was Don babbling about when he was drunk to Lloyd, about him having many names, but he knew who he was?

I mean, I get he's calling him the Devil, but why?

  7. I think Don thought that Lloyd sold him on the machines with his slick talk and got really offended about it. Like, he let another sales guy work him without realizing it. He let his smarts and guard down so far he's just another shmuck. Don comes back drunk to tell Llyod to shove his job threatening machines up his ass. The next morning Don gets told to pull his head out his ass.

Outside of the obvious devil references - I noticed that Don's attitude toward Lloyd took a turn after he watched him supervise (yell at? direct? correct?) an old man on a ladder. It was a super quick scene, but the camera hung on it for a second, but I think Don identified with the old dude. A young, fast talking computer guy telling an old man how to do his job, and Don's realization that he IS the old man now. He almost talked himself into a circle, the whole "you've always been here..." is a reference to the new generation making the older generation obsolete. There will always be a fast talking inspired kid to tell the old men what to do, and the old men will eventually die out, kid becomes old man, cycle continues, etc.

It actually was an interesting take ON the Devil/Satanic influence, and how it's the oldest story in the book. it IS all too common - generation A says "generation B is terrible! Their ways of doing things/music/culture/education/etc is EVIL! Why in my day....." blahblah. generation B eventually gets older, and in turn, says the same thing about Generation C. The loop continues forever. I think that was subconscious Don cementing his impending obsoleteness even more.
