You have to make up your mind whether you want a capital punishment argument or a mental health argument. You're on the wrong side of the fence either way.

If you were 100% certain that someone was going to kill you, and nobody believed you, would you act first? What would you do? This kind of paranoia is what a great number of schizophrenic people feel on a day to day basis. These people need help, not to be put down like dogs.

Mental illness is so prolific yet it is always treated as taboo or completely ignored. Over 20% of people in the US have a diagnosable mental health problem. Over 1 in 137 people in the US will have schizophrenia. Roughly 1% of women and 3% of men are sociopaths. That means that chances are that someone you know is incapable of feeling love.

Ignorance killed this mans wife and child.

It's a sick individual. Dealing with that kind of illness is, in my opinion, one of the worst fates that could befall someone, and I don't really see how killing the person is fair or just or anything like that.

I don't really get why people feel the need to play god in these situations and execute handicapped people because they're a burden on society. It's not fucking Sparta.

It's a tragedy for the dude who has to live with that, as well as without eyes.

Acting like this guy is just being a dick instead of treating him like a sick person is precisely the attitude that led to those people being killed. Continuing to deal with the case this way is pretty indefensible.

I don't have a personal anecdote like icarusfall, but I've always had a lot of sympathy for schizophrenics, because that's always been my worst nightmare. Some people are afraid of plane crashes or cancer, but slowly slipping into madness without realizing it is mine. One of the worst diseases imaginable.

No, a crazy mother fucker did. Is it a shame? Absolutely. But ignorance didn't do it.

  6. Honestly, if I commited such a despicable act, being put back in a sound mind where I can be fully cognizant of what I did and given a bunch of time to rot in a cell thinking about it would essentially be the most inhuman form of torture possible. It's a fate worse than death.

  7. Don't be so dramatic. You'd be messed up a bit for sure, but you'd figure it out.
    Boo, Hiss.

Yeah, and while spending life in a cell may not seem so great to you now, if the alternative was death, it might be seem like a much more viable option.

It's no secret on TNL that I spent some time in the hospital for a mental illness last year and while I just hit a rough patch in my life and was briefly overcome, I met other people in the hospital who were WAY worse off than I was. I don't know if you've ever met somebody with severe schizophrenia (it varies, some people who suffer from it can function almost the same as regular people) but you can't but help feel sympathy for them, no matter what they may have done.
