The genre was pretty diverse around 2000. Quake III, No One Lives Forever, Starsiege: Tribes, Deus Ex, Requiem: Avenging Angel, etc. are all very different. It did sort of enter a less innovative period after that for a few years (although I still found enough good games). The rise of the internet in the mainstream made developers focus more on multiplayer, too, although I think that trend ended with the success of Half-Life 2. I don’t think multiplayer or single player are being neglected in the genre today.

Requiem was definitely before I got burned out. So it might have been more like 2001 or so. The multiplayer focus was definitely a major reason I lost interest, but there was also less diversity going on then. Half Life 2 was indeed the game that brought me back to the genre and there were a number of good games that followed that.

If anything I think we need more FPS games. Or at the very least, just change everything that's in development now over to first person. Then maybe the gaming populace would be satisfied.

    Yes. "Q1 2009," apparently.

  6. Man, the potential for that game is enough to make you want to slap someone.

  7. Particularly if it doesn't meet that potential.

And even if that doesn't turn out well, there's always the Obsidian Aliens RPG. That company has so much potential..

I'm looking forward to that one. FEAR 2 should be a little more challenging than the first. Instead of 10 life packs of 50 health, you now can carry only 3 life packs- but they'll give you FULL health when used.

Doom 64 > Doom 3. Being jumped by 8 zombie soldiers or imps, mowing them down in 3.2 seconds with the chaingun, and taking one last look at the carnage littering the ground before you move on = priceless. I don't recall that in Doom 3. Thank goodness for the ports of Ultimate Doom & Doom II on the Xbox limited collector's edition.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

Everything special about Aliens has been stripmined by every sci-fi FPS of the last 10 years.
