Sorry but just because something else isn't proven doesn't mean you should teach something that can never be proven, intelligent design should never be mandatory in school. It is appalling that you have such a mindset that would allow that to even feasibly be acceptable. I have no problem with schools having classes on it, but to ever require it for anyone other than a theology major is horrid.
Okay, I see where you're coming from, although I hardly find it to be "appalling."

So how would you propose that the origins of the universe be taught? I'm not asking to be antagonistic; I'm really wondering what your thoughts are on the matter.

  3. I don't feel that it needs to be a mandatory thing at all; I mean big bang theory etc comes up in science, intelligent design is specific to religions, and if a person is religious and goes to their church, sunday school and all that they can learn that stuff. I certainly wouldn't mind a theology class being an option in say high school to talk about different religions; or specifically devoted to intelligent design though I'm not sure there is enough substance to have an entire class on it.

I'm all for it being optional, or if anything, teach it back to back, if it's going to be forced you cannot exclude evolution, and you have to follow intelligent design without religious influences. Maybe there is a god who designed everything perfect but you can't go around saying it's the catholic god or anything else. If it's going to be taught it needs to be without religious influence other than naming a god which can be generic.

The appalled part was suggesting that something while no conclusion has been drawn, has evidence leading to hypothesis versus purely putting faith into something seemed ridiculous.

Fuck. I come in here only to find a discussion about religion, which is even more irritating and naive than Obama, and that's a powerful statement.

  5. It's more religion and it's place (lack of) in the public school systems.

And yet, in spite of what you view as his spiritual handicap, he has done more to turn around the effectiveness of Louisiana government than anyone who has come before him. That says a lot about his abilities as a leader.

As for any hubbub about teaching intelligent design as a theory in schools, I won't see a problem with it until the scientific community can competently explain how the universe was created. You can't create matter from nothing; it's a simple law of physics. When science can prove that all the components necessary for the Big Bang were not, in fact, put in place by a higher power, then I will say that intelligent design's usefulness has come and gone.

You know what I see as a more pressing problem? The Secretary of State spent the weekend begging a communist country to buy more American debt. That's a big, big problem... much bigger that the personal beliefs of a governor-- personal beliefs that have not hindered in the least his ability to effectively govern.

    OMG.

Please let me clarify again, so hopefully this sinks and people realize what the real argument is about and what the Creationists are actually pushing for here and not the steaming pile of shit that just made its way from Squall's brain to his fingertips...

Intelligent Design is Creationism repackaged with all references to the word "Creationism" being replaced with the term, "Intelligent Design."

This is important to know because when this was originally being pushed through the courts as "Creationism" in the 80's it was ruled unacceptable to be taught as a Science in the classroom because it was found to be a Religious Belief based on that fact that its claims pretty much had no basis in reality. Recently "Creationists" edited their "Creationism" handbook and decided to change the name to "Intelligent Design" and try the exact same thing again. They succeeded in Louisiana when their legislative board, Bobby Jindal, and apparently Squall decided it was a science and therefore should be taught alongside Science in a Public Classroom.

Forgetting the idea that, ID is still considered by the other states to be a Religious Belief and not a Science, and forgetting as well that something that collapses so quickly under Scientific scrutiny cannot possibly be a Science, it is also completely ridiculous that we have opened up our schools to the possibility that not only is this bullshit going to be mentioned in these poor kids classrooms, but now any other wackjob who wishes to, lets say, take the Muslim Religion and pretend to apply Science to it, will have a nice little precedent to rally their lawyers behind because of what this idiot did.

Squall its not religious oppression. Its the fact that it is not a fucking Science, it is a belief, and at that, a completely narrow minded, half-assed belief most Christians who it is directed towards do not choose to take part in.

Don't forget as well the double standard that basically now applies here where people will be screaming to get their nonsense taught alongside it, since now their nonsense is not represented.

P.S. Look I sound agitated a lot on these boards, especially recently. But this is an issue that really, really bothers me and to be honest I'm shocked you feel this way Squall. I know you're religious, and honestly I respect that as a belief. I do. My anger is towards this idea that the Creationist argument has gotten so good at fucking with people that the general public is actually falling for their intentions when their intentions are something else entirely. Hell I'd even be for a nice Theology class being taught a Public School covering Religious beliefs.

I just cannot and will not give in to this idea that somehow something that cannot stand up to even the slightest Scientific scrutiny is suddenly supposed to be regarded in a factual, meaningful, way in a Westernized Country. That would be like me suddenly getting a law passed where I can write, "Smoking may not cause cancer after all" right next to "Smoking may cause Cancer." on cigarette packs, and not be asked to provided any evidence for such a claim.

You know, I'd settle for neither being taught in schools. Because in all honesty, kids don't really need to know what the current theory of how the earth got here. But this is coming from a person who thinks the bulk of public education is useless information. Outside of a few months of English and math, what does anyone really get out of it? Politically correct History class? Circling the parts of speech in a sentence over and over again? Reading that pile "romeo and Juliet?" What about all those horrible scholastic awarding winning short stories everyone had to read? Complete garbage.

  10. Shut up, IP.
