The best thing Sony has done this generation is PSN. It was a rough start, but it's the closest thing to a console version of Steam. Certain PSP games can work on PS3, PSP games work on Vita, and PS1 games work on the whole lot. None of it tied to a specific device/shop/emulator.
Conversely the Nintendo online stuff has been so fragmented it's ridiculous. You can reason out the whys (emulators being incompatible, whatever), but the fact remains that it's disjointed. They're putting the WiiU/3DS under the eShop roof, so that's an improvement. However...it would be nice if 3DS eshop games would play on WiiU or something. It would completely destroy the reason for having two versions of MH3 though.
